Hello and welcome to my first article on CBM! I though that i could start out with an editorial ranking the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Feel free to let me know if you agree or disagree about any of these choices.
9. Iron Man 2
We all know Iron Man 2 had a lot of wasted potential. Following on the heels of one of the arguably best CBMs ever, Iron Man, this movie was quite a let down. In all honesty though, it did werve its purpose. It effectevuly mannaged to set up some major points and characters of The Avengers while still being a delighful romp.
8. Thor: The Dark World
Thor: The Dark World is not a
bad movie by any stretch, but it is far from Marvel's best solo offering. With an underdevoloped villian, to the forced humor that didn't sit well with many, this movie fell flat on its face at time. Even with the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, director Alan Taylor never managed to make the audiece care one way or the other how the movie would end up. The lack of suspense in the third act killed this movie for most people. Not even Loki can save this one from bashing.
7. Iron Man 3
Featuring a plot twist with the one of the most sevire responses in CBM hostory, Iron Man 3 is quite a brash movie. Love it or hate it, the Mandarin twist happened. While being a good popcorn muncher, there are just two many holes in this movie to plug. With little actual Iron Man time, we all relized that it is the suit that makes the man, at least in the case of this movie.
6. The Incredible Hulk
What to say about this movie. It's one of those movies that you can see five times, yet not be able to recite five details about. There is a scene on a university, a scene in Harlem, and one of Stan Lee's best cameos. With that to be said, a slightly unmemorable movie beats a memorably bad movie any day.
5. Thor
The god of thunder rode into theaters in 2011 to a less than thunderous applause. While die hard fans knew and loved the Norse diety, not many ventured to the theater to see this movie. Yet, this is one of Marvel's strongest movies to date. Featuring excelent as always preformances by Tom Hiddleston's Loki and Jamie Alexander's Lady Sif, this movie deserves more prasie then it recieves.
4. Captain America: The FIrst Avenger
Haley Atwell and Hugo Weaving put in strong preformances supporting our main man Chris Evan's Steve Rogers. While this movie does have its flaws, it constucts an epic period piece by being both a World War II movie and a super hero movie. With wonderful action scenes and the intense amount of universe building crammed into this one moive, it deserves its place on this list.
3. Iron Man
The movie that started it all, this wonderful movie broke down the barriers of what a CBM could be. Introducing us not only to Tony Stark, but the entire MCU, this film is one of many people's all time favorite comic book movies. With the clever banter, amazing effects, and wonderful cheistry between Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark and Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts, this movie is undeniably a suberb film.
2. The Avengers
This movie was one of the most wonderful experiences in CBM history. Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America all shared the big screen for the first time. Featuring some of the best moments in the entire MCU, this movie finds all of our favorite heros fighting side by side to save the planet. This is also the movie that changed the CBM game, becoming the 3rd highest grossing film of all time, every studio wants a piece of this action.
1. Captian America: The WInter Soldier
I had a hard time deciding between number one and number two, but The Winter Soilder won out the top spot. There are just so many amazing things about this movie. The amazing cinematography and bold direction that the Russos took pushed this movie over The Avengers. The combat in this movie is top notch. The twists and reveals that this movie holds will change the MCU forever, and that is a major feat, but the most important thing about this movie is how much the directors make you care. While it may not be the whole universe in the balance (looking at you Thor:TDW), you truely care about the characters. You feel Cap's deep connection with Bucky/The Winter Soilder and even after three viewings you still are on the edge of your seat hoping that it all ends well for our heros.
So what do you think? Is my list sound or do you think it's totaly wrong? Let me know what your favorite MCU films are in the comments below!
