Jeff Goldblum On INDEPENDENCE DAY 2: "They Have A Part For Me"

I ain't heard no fat lady! Will Smith ("Men In Black 3") won't return as 'Captain Steven Hiller' for Fox's Independence Day sequel, but Jeff Goldblum sounds like he's in. The director and producer have informed him 'David Levinson' has been written into it.

Last year at this time, 20th Century Fox decided to set a July 1st, 2015 release date for Independence Day 2. At the time, it seemed a bit optimistic seeing as though the sequel's script was still being being worked on by screenwriter James Vanderbilt ("The Amazing Spider-Man 2"). He was actually working on two scripts, one that included Will Smith's character and one that did not. We would later find out that Will Smith officially passed on the sequel. At least the original director, Roland Emmerich, and his producing partner, Dean Devlin, are back, and it sounds like Jeff Goldblum ("The Fly") we'll be back as tech savvy and irritating environmentalist 'David Levinson.'

TIME: It seems like there’s been a lot going around in the last few months about potential sequels for Jurassic Park and Independence Day, so I was wondering whether those were things that you’d given any thought to or might be involved with?

JEFF GOLDBLUM: Well, people like that Jurassic Park thing, and I think they’re making another which I tell them, I’ll be first in line for, but am not in. And then Independence Day, I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer, and they’ve been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon.

TIME: Right. When I looked into it a bit, I saw something from a year ago saying, “Oh, maybe some people are working on it, but maybe not Will Smith,” but all of that always seems so nebulous until it actually happens.

J.G.: I think you’ve put your finger on it. “Nebulous until actually” is what that file is under, but yeah, they’re still talking about it and I’ve heard recent rumblings here and there about it, and “Oh, there’s a scripting coming in” — maybe last weekend there was a script handed in, so it’s brewing.

I'm just glad the fat lady has sung on 'David Levinson' and Independence Day 2. I know, I should forget the fat lady. I'm obsessed with fat lady. I'll just let you get out of here!

Maybe after 'After Earth' Will Smith should consider a part in this one. He owes his fans for that POS

Extended version is less comedic.

Very glad he's in the sequel.

It's funny that Will Smith has turned down the one movie I would actually look forward to seeing him in.

His career has been one putrid stinker after another. The last thing he did that I actually enjoyed was ENEMY OF THE STATE -- 16 years ago.

I remember reading years ago that Fox had greenlit, "ID4ever." It was supposed to take place several years after the first ID4 and would show how humans integrated the alien tech into their own to create their own ships. Sounded interesting, but then I guess it was shelved.

@Nomis D@mn you, I'm actually reading this from the trone of porcelain and then you put that in my face and now I cant go on without feeling his uhm um eyes uhm watching.

ID4 is one of the most awesome stupid movies ever and I hope he will be back in a sequel. After Earth is still too (not so) fresh in my mind for me to be able to see Mr Smith again on the big screen without squiling like a pig on a hillbilly canoe trip.

I'm fine with Jeff coming back. My guess the reason Will isn't returning is, because the people making this movie didn't want his no talent son in it too.

Not sure what the second movie would be about. In the first one, the aliens wiped out most of the worlds military force, population and technology. Major cities were annihilated off of one mother ship. If another mother ship came and simply ran Norton Anti Virus software on their system, it would be a blood bath for humans in a matter of a few hours.

This man was born to play Reed Richards. With Charlize Theron as Sue. What a damn shame.
