STAR WARS, THE DARK KNIGHT & THE AVENGERS Top Empire's 301 Greatest Movies of All Time

STAR WARS, THE DARK KNIGHT & THE AVENGERS Top Empire's 301 Greatest Movies of All Time

After piling through hundreds of thousands of votes, Empire has unveiled their list of the 301 best films ever made. A number of blockbusters made their way onto the list, including The Dark Knight, The Avengers, Star Wars: Episodes III-VI, Lord of the Rings and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

In their biggest ever poll, UK magazine Empire looked to the opinions of hundreds of thousands of fans to determine the 301 greatest movies of all time. Among the Oscar winners, timeless classics and even a few independent films, there were a plethora of superhero, sci-fi and fantasy blockbusters. Since there are 301 films on the list, this recap will be kept at CBM-related entries. Taking the top spot was Star Wars: Episode V - Empire Strikes Back (1980, with Episode IV coming in at #6)praised for the added comedy, romance and complexity. "Where Star Wars had been an unabashedly exciting space adventure, Empire Strikes Back introduced complexity and uncertainty to the galaxy far, far away. The stakes are raised, the characters relationships tested and evolved in surprising ways, and a dash of pure black is mixed into those primary paint colours."

Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008) ranked third on the list, comparing it to Michael Mann's Heat, "'but with the occasional psychotic clown running through it!' Batman Begins had taken Bruce Wayne's world seriously, but it still had a touch of the fantastical, especially during its final act. Here Nolan finally and firmly grounded the comic-book genre in something that felt truly real and thrillingly visceral." Fan favourites Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003) and Jurassic Park (1993) were #12 and #18 respectively, and sci-fi films Aliens (1986), The Matrix (1999) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) hit the top 20. Some of the most recent additions to the top 50 included last year's award magnet Gravity at #35, Sam Mendes' Skyfall (2012) at #45 and Marvel's box office-smashing The Avengers (2012) at #16.

Two of the Harry Potter movies hit the list (Philosopher's Stone: #223, Deathly Hallows - Part 2: #152), as well as Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie (1979) at #121 and Ghostbusters at #63. A few other notworthy CBM-related entries: the remaining two of Nolan's Bat-films, Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012) ranked at #138 and #72 respectively, Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) at #183, Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) at #9, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) at #188 and at #245 respectively, and Marvel's Avengers opener Iron Man coming in at #239. The full list is available to check out and dissect here, with an in-depth look at some of the films in the new issue of Empire. What are your thoughts on this list, and what is your all-time favourite film (or films)?

There's movies that should be higher and movies that should be lower, but all depends on your opinion.

For me there's like 15 better movies than any CBM in the list.

"Man of Steel" was listed at #286 in the top 301, edging out the 1989 Batman movie, which came in at #288.

"Superman: The Movie" is still the most popular Superman film, voted in at #121.

Space Jam isn't #1 so this list like almost every other list is IRRELEVANT

The Godfather was #2, Schindler's List #25 and Midnight Cowboy didn't place. I didn't put many (if any) non-blockbusters in this article, seeing as this is a Comic Book Movie website.

WinterSoldier33
Episode IV is my personal favourite.

I'm not a Star Wars fan, but the way that movie influenced pop culture, it deserves the number one spot. Kinda mad they put Aliens over Alien, though.

am I the only one that thinks skyfall is way too overrated ?
& why is star trek 2 on this list?

No 'How High', 'Bachelor Party' or 'House Party 3'???

This list is bunk.

Meanwhile, I AM pleased 'Iron Man 3' came in only 3 spots lower than 'Iron Man'.

WTF?!?! why is tdkr #72 & RESERVOIR DOGS #75? RESERVOIR DOGS should be at least top 20! in my personal top 5!
TheYoungMan

TDKR was great, people. Just because you didn't like it for some weird reason or another doesn't undermine the movie's merits. In case you didn't notice, critics loved it, and the public loved it. So I don't know why some people are surprised to see it ranked highly on things like this. It's like saying "What?! The Heat are in the finals this year?!?! WTF how????"

My top ten movies of all time:

1. Stalker (1979)
2. Blue Velvet (1986)
3. The Seventh Seal (1957)
4. Three Colors: Red (1994)
5. Blow-Up (1966)
6. Andrei Rublev (1966)
7. Wild Strawberries (1957)
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
9. Mulholland Dr. (2001)
10. Ikiru (1952)

Yeah, only comic book fans didn't like TDKR. It's kinda funny when they pretend the movie failed critically and box office wise too.

Makes me laugh. teehee.

Seriously. Cap 2, The Dark Knight Rises, and Iron Man are below The Avengers?

Just goes to show you that depth, emotion, and character are meaningless in lists like this when compared to mindless action comedy summer blockbusters.

@thewonderer

Well said, mate.

And this is my Top 5:

5. Oldboy
4. City of God
3. Seven Samurai
2. Psycho
1. Pulp Fiction

Well, at least this week, my list varies.

I always prefer The Dark Knight, TDKR and at least 3 of the X-Men movies way, way more than any MS movie. The only ones I actually dig, with some reserves, are Cap 2 and IM.

The rest of the them are just too silly for my taste.

@thewonderer

I'd actually go further and say that t depth, emotion, and character are meaningless to most comic book nerds.

Yesterday I heard that DoFP is "too dark" and "doesn't have enough" humor.

That's what Comic Book Fans seem to want, nowadays. Explains why they love MCU movies so much.

This list just shows that people have short memory spans. how many of these movies were from the last decade, or have become popularized to the point they cant be separated from any list?

there are hundreds of movies equally as good or better than 90% of this list, but people are too young or have forgotten them. they might as well just ask what the best movies of the past 20 years are, because thats where these open ended polls tend to end up as (barring, again, the prototypical classics - your casablanca, star wars and godfathers, etc.)

MightyZeus
MightyZeus - 5/28/2014, 6:51 AM
I actually like most of those films listed. I do agree that The Dark Knight should be higher than The Avengers even though i love both films. The Dark Knight Rises is not a terrible film, it was actually critically well received and was a success at the box office. Surprised Man of Steel is on that list because i love Man of Steel. My top five would be difficult, so i would have to list my top 10.

1.The Dark Knight Trilogy
2.Lord of the Rings Trilogy
3.Alien, Aliens
4.Terminator 2
5.The Avengers
6.Harry Potter Deathly Hallows PT 2
7.Captain America The Winter Soldier
8.Inception
9.Blade, Blade 2
10.Skyfall
Null

Seems about right. Kinda surprised they didn't have the Avengers in the top 10 though. It was a game changer. The Dark Knight is right ok the money.

One thing I think we can all agree on is that Star Wars sucks.
