SUMMER CB/SCI-FI MOVIES - A LOOK SO FAR

SUMMER CB/SCI-FI MOVIES - A LOOK SO FAR

With this being the mid-way point for our summer Comic Book and Sci-Fi movie season, let's take a look on what we've endured so far.

So the summer movie season is just about over and with August's Guardians of the Galaxy still on the Horizon let's look at the CBM/Sci-Fi movies of Summer 2014.

1. Godzilla - I do suffer from some fanboy bias on this one. I've loved Godzilla forever and as most of you know my entire right forearm is a Godzilla tattoo (because I'm crazy). The human element of the movie is what I can complain about and they whole lack of Godzilla argument is getting old. It was built up like JAWS, how long was it till you really actually got a good look at JAWS??? See my point.  I think with the forthcoming sequel we will see much much more Godzilla and less of the human characters. I wouldn't at all cry if the Ford Family didn't return for the second installment. With rumors of Mothra, Gamera and the Monster Island being used as concepts for the second movie this fan boy can only dream of what is to come for the King of Monsters.

2. Captain America: The Winter Solider - Marvel finally nails a sequel with a less forfceful  overtone and scales down the superhero aspect of the movie and make it a more political thriller/conspiracy. Since I trust most of you have seen it HYDRA has changed the entire landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, everything is going to be different now and it finally gives Agents of SHIELD a really menace to fight on a weekly basis rather then run rehashed X-Files creature feature episodes based on C List Marvel villains and characters. The adaptation og Armin Zola and Winter Soldier were translated perfectly to the screen and set up villains for future installment with the likes of Crossbones. Another great thing is the Easter egg dropped for Doctor Strange and the post credits scene with Scarlet Witch and their version of Quicksilver.

3. X-Men: Days of Future Past - Go see this movie right now. This is a good stepping stone to redeem an entire series of sub-par and just flat out awful X-Men movies. Everything between X-2 and Wolverine is garbage in one way or another, that's what happens when I decent director jumps ship to create a overly nostalgic and boring Superman movie, and you hire a guy only known for pissing off everyone at the Oscars and directing the Rush Hour film series. Finally I' watching a Sci-Fi movies again and not a thousand mutant cameos thrown into one movie with Hugh Jackman. Singer's return is a great expansion on what was started in First Class and Apocalypse looks promising. Quicksilver also manages to steal the whole movie. Fox is taking notes from Marvel, where Sony has given us 5 Spider-Man movies that when it boils down to it are all exactly the same, which brings me to.....

4. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - Visually this is the most comic accurate Spider-Man movies made to date. The suit is the best part of the movie. Other then that this is a rehash of the last 4 movies I've seen. Someone who is Peter Parker's friend/mentor turns out to be or becomes a villain learns his secret identity and then someone dies. For real, every Spider-Man movie but Spider-Man 2 ends in a funeral, and Peter Parker grieving over a grave. Spider-Man 1-3 is almost the same ending shot, Toby McGuire in Tears and something about power and responsibility. It's repetitive and old. I realize now I only really get psyched for these movies is because of villains and it seems Sony took notes from the worst time in Fox's X-men franchise by shoving as many villains into the movie as possible. Why not build a solid monster bad guy villain and develop a back story we kinda actually care about. I'm more excited for Sinister Six the The Amazing Spider-Man 3, at this point because maybe it won't end with a voice mail message from Martin Sheen and a inner monologue about pushing those away to keep them safe and the merit of personal sacrifice. Again I've felt like I've seen the same movie since 2002. That's 12 years with 5 movies in between that all amount to almost the same thing.

All we can do now is wait is wait for Guardians of the Galaxy to round out this years Superhero Sci-Fi movies, then it's the wait till the next phase of Marvel movies!

Guardians of the Galaxy will be Marvel's next billion dollar hit. The two reasons why will be because Thanos from "Avengers" will be back and voiced by Josh Brolin this time, and the most important crucial reason why is because of Rocket Raccoon the only character in Guardians that is much more well known than the rest.

Well, we'll just have to wait and see, king hulk. I've been doing a lot to convince and persuade people to make Guardians Marvel's next billion dollar hit. I've written almost. 20+ letters to Walt Disney Studios to give Guardians a nationwide release in 4,444 theaters when it comes out on August 1st to make it the largest and widest nationwide opening ever for a Marvel Studios film and to help it potentially beat the opening weekend record of Avengers by $3 million dollars for a 3-day opening weekend gross of $210 million dollars. I've also persuaded people that Guardians will make a billion for a number of reasons, because of Thanos returning and being voiced by Josh Brolin, the fact that it sets up Avengers 3 with Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet and potentially the Avengers and Guardians teaming up to stop Thanos, and the most important reason is because of Rocket Racoon, because he is the character everyone is excited to see get his own film before Wonder Woman does. also, this film will prove that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is called the Marvel Cinematic UNIVERSE for a reason.

wow well that's a lot of effort you've put in fair play, im gonna resereve my judgement until we atleast hear from people who've seen the film i belive screenings start in a week or 2 and as usual Mcnyango is going (lucky bastard).
dont get me wrong i love the guardians but i billion is a lot of money, but you never know stranger things have happened (like avatar reaching 2 billion lol)

Godzilla kinda sucked for me, but I'll watch again for my final verdict (and I love Zilla too)...I agree with the rest of the order (for me, Cap #1, X-Men #2, Spidey #3 and Zilla #4) Hoping GotG jumps to at least #2...

Still haven't seen Cap2 or Spidey2. Enjoyed Godzilla and X-Men, though.

I'm glad you complemented on my hard work to run this long campaign to make Guardians become Marvel's next billion dollar hit. Alright, kinghulk. Reserve your judgement but ask Mcnyango when he sees Guardians if he thinks it will become Marvel's next billion dollar hit. You're right. Stranger things have happened since Avatar made nearly 2.8 billion. But, think about this: with Guardians setting up Avengers 3, were building up to something much more bigger than what we thought when the MCU started when it was building up to the first Avengers movie. I'm still going with my faith that GOTG will make a billion dollars. Reserve your judgment until u see it. But, I'm still going with what I have faith in.

god i cant wait to see guardians now, luckily living in the UK we get it a little bit earlier :). hope Thanos is as awesome as i hope he is, i wonder what he will sound like? i think they nailed rocket and Groot (from what ive heard) so hopefully Thanos will be awesome.
MarvelFan15
MarvelFan15 - 6/2/2014, 3:29 PM
So, you'll ask Mcnyango if he thinks Guardians will be Marvel's next billion dollar hit?
kinghulk
kinghulk - 6/2/2014, 3:36 PM
yeah, i'll be seeing the film regardless i love the guardians. i hope it does make a billion that would be incredible for a film people are saying is marvel's riskiest yet. marvel's star wars
MarvelFan15
MarvelFan15 - 6/2/2014, 3:39 PM
Thanks. And, I agree with you. And, I'm glad you now hope Guardians will make a billion. People are saying its a risk because some of them haven't read the comics. So, I hope they think otherwise because I have faith that Guardians will make a billion.

i love the comics i'm of of the people who knew who they where before the film was announced. i feel like james gunn has done a good job so far from what we've seen. i hope groot grows very big at some point in the film. with AOU being released maybe we could see annihilation conquest in GOTG 2 now that would be awesome.

Hey, Disney wrote back to me and say they take this responsibility seriously. So, I should continue this campaign until I've known that I have succeeded, okay, SniktBub.

The Winter Soldier, Days of Future Past and Godzilla have all made me happy. I'm frustrated that I have been unable to see Under the Skin in a theater, but looking forward to that.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the first CBM in years that I haven't been interested in seeing, so I can't comment on it.

Excited for Edge of Tomorrow, Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar (not summer, I know) and maybe Jupiter Ascending and Lucy.
Wolf38
Wolf38 - 6/2/2014, 8:58 PM
And regarding Guardians of the Galaxy, I can easily see it hitting $1B. If it's as enjoyable as it looks, it may tap into the "all demographics" sci-fi vein in a manner similar to The Avengers, Star Wars, Avatar, etc.

As good as X-Men and Captain America films may be, they have to work harder to pull people in. GOTG just looks like a blast, tons of fun.

MightyZeus - 6/2/2014, 9:06 PM
I am looking forward to GOTG, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Edge of Tomorrow, Interstellar(it'll be released in Summer for me). I'll pass on TMNT, Lucy and Hercules since all three look terrible and uninteresting.

As for my top 3 Summer films:
1. Captain America: TWS
2. Godzilla
3. DOFP

TASM 2 does not need to be even in the top 100 films of 2014.

Solid year so far.

5. Godzilla (Effective ominous buildup, and spectacular finish. Never going to watch again)

4. Edge of Tomorrow (Great action and alien designs. Clever story. Never going to watch again)

3. Captain America: The Winter Solider (Great fight scenes & Marvin Gaye montage)

2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sure it has problems, but it has a ton of heart.)

1. Days of Future Past

(BLINK. QUICKSILVER. SENTINELS. GAHHHH. Although it doesn't have the greatest character stuff going on, it's still a fun, well-paced ride. I feel this is going to be infinitely rewatchable. Excellent use of Roberta Fleck. A scrumptious film.)
Starkasm
Starkasm - 6/3/2014, 3:50 AM
1 Cap
2 X-Men
3 Spidey
4 Godzilla

1. X-Men: Days of Future Past

2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro

3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

4. Godzilla

They were all fantastic films, but that's my ranking. Interesting in seeing Guardians of the Galaxy, Edge of Tomorrow and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but I'm not super stoked for anything until the late part of the year.

Then we get Mockingjay and Interstellar, which I am incredibly excited for.

@Pasto and OmegaDaGod, lol at your lists.

There is exactly ZERO chance that GotG makes a billion. Being released in August alone guarantees that, so give it up already.

I won't give up. I have faith it will make a billion. And, until I know otherwise, I will not give up.

gotg is another childish comedy nonsense it wont make a billion. CA:Tws was great as it was the most dc like movie in the mcu
MarvelFan15
MarvelFan15 - 6/8/2014, 6:53 PM
Okay, first of all, tonytony, don't be so doubtful that Guardians won't make a billion worldwide. I have faith it will after watching the trailers, tv spots, behind the scenes videos, and promos for the movie that it will be Marvel's next billion dollar hit. Also, it's not a childish comedy, it's a space opera. And, I believe the genre of this movie is an action-adventure/sic-fi, comedy actioneer, dramedy space opera. So, don't be so doubtful. You'll be wrong when the movie comes out. Just wait and see.
