The Avengers: A COMIC BOOK FAN'S movie!

Sappy romances. Lame comedies. Cheesy action flicks. Gross-out horror. Snore-fest dramas. The film industry has many genres. CBM's are ours, and I believe 'The Avengers' is OUR film!

There are fan's of all genres of film. People gravitate toward their favorite genre when a film of that genre premieres.
Of these genres , there generally is a 'great film' that fans of that particular genre point to.

For example, fans of romance will laud 'Gone with the Wind' or 'Titanic'.

Sci-fi fans(like myself) will cry loud and proud that 'Star Wars' 4&5 is the greatest. That's our boast of pride! There are many more, but that will suffice.

For Action/adventure , there's 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' or 'The Adventures of Robin Hood'(my personal favorite) or 'Terminator'.

As for horror, sh** that's an easy one: ' The Exorcist' , 'Night of the Living Dead' or 'Halloween'.

There are many dramas , but the 'holy grail' recognized by most are 'Citizen Kane' and 'Casablanca'. My personal favorite is 'Shawshank Redemption'.

Comedy? Anything classic Marx Bros. , 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail', 'Airplane' or 'Blazin' Saddles'. Again, just a few mentioned here.

So where's OUR 'holy grail'? Where's the benchmark CBM that define's an ENTIRE GENRE by which ALL future CBM's will strive to emulate?
Well, so far there isn't any.

Everyone has their favorites-- 'The Dark Knight', ' Superman', 'Iron-man', 'Spider-man #2'(my fav!) or 'Blade', but there's no general consensus, as with these other genres stated above.

I believe(deep breath), this May 4th we will have our dream movie.

How many years have comic book fans and fanboy's alike been DREAMING of a movie of this magnitude.
It's been a fantasy for many years...for various reasons.

The technology wasn't sufficiently realized, or the funding wasn't available. The right people hadn't had their hands on the rights of the property, or the right people weren't involved.

Well , thank Odin all of these stars have aligned!

Alas, the poor DC fanboy's and comic geeks have yet to see THEIR dream come true with a 'Justice League' movie in the pipeline, but they can at least vicariously rejoice with ALL 'comic-dom' that the 'next best thing' will soon be upon us.

This is OUR movie! Made by a comic book company, directed by a comic book fanboy geek, and lovingly made by actor's who respect the source material!

This is the ultimate fanboy movie!
OUR CBM 'Star Wars'! HA!

Now I know some DC guy's will say 'TDKR' or 'Man of Steel'.

Really?

You think these films will define a genre?
No sir, they will not.

They're more corporate- for the general masses, but Avenger's ,although made to please the ticket buying public as well, has a depth that goes beyond profit...THIS IS A DREAM COME TRUE! By MARVEl, by Whedon and by the actor's who put their heart into making a movie all fanboys and comic geeks alike can be PROUD of!

So in closing, prepare yourself world! Prepare yourself for OUR WORLD!
The world we've been enjoying through our silly comic books for YEARS!

Now world you will see what we've seen . You will know what we've known!

OUR HEROES KICK ASS!

i'd rather keep fans away from the film adaptations of these franchises because, no matter how much you people think otherwise, fanboys are still outside of the mainstream...a Planet Hulk film will never work with the general moviegoing public, I'm sorry. With fanboys you risk getting watchmen where the visuals are very close to the comic but all the substance has been left out because fanboys care too much about style over substance, which the reactions to the captain America and Spiderman costumes should've told you. i'm just saying that fanboys should not direct a movie of a franchise they're into because sometimes you need to take a step backwards to see what works on-film and what doesn't and fanboys don't seem to get that story and characters trump style and visuals.

I think TDKR will be a more quality film than The Avengers, and it will make more money. Not to mention, more of the masses will like "The Dark Knight Rises".

After stating all this I believe "The Avengers will represent our genre better. Simpiy because of the tone, and the fact that it is made by Marvel Studios. Marvel Studios films are more like the average superhero film. If "The Avengers" isn't an amazing film, then it loses all credibility as ever being a film the CBM film that defines the genre.

If The Avengers doesn't succeed we can always count on Superman the Movie, Spider-Man 2, and Ironman to back us up.

golden123, scour the internet bro, you will find that WAY more people are anticipating Avengers than TDKR. There are even charts and shit out there where users have voted on different sites and it's unanimous, Avengers has much higher anticipation.

I completely agree with this article!

The Avengers will rule all CBMs that is until Warner Bros. stop being pussies and build up the courage to start up a Justice League movie...But for now Avengers over all !!!

@EssexFactor

Except IGN, the people there are anticipating TDKR much more than The Avengers...but IGN sucks anyways so I'm going to agree with you.

Personally, I don't give a damn if The Avengers is made by a comic book company or a comic book fanboy geek (as you put it). Unless it's better in quality than The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, Iron Man etc., I'm not going to think of it as the "holy grail" of CBMs. If it is, I will be glad to.

And the genre-defining film(s) is from the point of view of the entire industry and movie-going population, and how they view the genre. As Mothra said, that is clearly The Dark Knight for now at least. Maybe you can make the argument that the comic fans' "holy grail" is different from the genre-defining film. That happens a lot here.

I think Spider Man 2 is the holy grail of Comic Book films..It had a good mix of story, emotion, humor and action, TDK action scenes were very meh in my opinion..

Star Wars 1& 2? You mean 'A New Hope' and 'Empire Strikes Back'?

The Avengers is the quintessential "comic book superhero movie". Culturally and aestically. If that style's your cup of tea, of course. TDK is the most technically, artistically, and financially significant CBM-related film. The film industry holds it as the highest standard for their projects.

@EsseXFactor: I said, "Not to mention, more of the masses will like 'The Dark Knight Rises'", and I began the short paragraph with "I think". I never said the word "anticipate". I honestly believe "The Dark Knight" will be more favored, by the audience, after the release, than "The Avengers".

Since you bring up anticipation, though. Everybody I, physically, talk to is anticipating The Avengers more. Keep in mind, most of my friends don't read comics or vote on online polls. Most of them don't go on fan websites like this, or any websites of this sort. Those polls aren't accurate portrayals of the movie going population.

@Lilvic92: "The Dark Knight isn't primarily an action film. It is primarily a crime drama. It only makes sense that the action movies aren't the best you have ever seen.

By the way, comic book movies are not a genre. Super hero movies are a genre. Saying comic book movies are a genre is like saying, movies based on books, tv shows, video games, plays, radio series, and pulp magazines are genres.

TheMyth - 4/9/2012, 12:00 PM
Golden123, Correct, I wouldn't hold them as evidence in court or anything, but consider this: Those online polls and people you physically know both give the same consensus. I would say that one adds credibility to the other. I also think the fact that Avengers is the first of its kind while TDKR is the 3rd installment of a series. That's not to say less people will see the film than Avengers, as the success of the franchise at this point clearly says otherwise. Overall, the eagerness and anticipation for Avengers is higher than it has been for any other film of the genre that I can remember, and I was 19 when X1 dropped for what it's worth.
