RED Sequel To Begin Filming Next Year, Says Helen Mirren

Speaking to The Jonathan Ross Show, Helen Mirren confirms that she'll return for the sequel to last year's hit action/comedy film RED, based on the DC comic of the same name. She says that filming begins next year, despite not having a director yet (the first film's director, Robert Schwentke, is busy filming R.I.P.D. right now, and may be still busy with the project by the time RED 2 begins production).

On Mirren’s part, the actress appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show last night and expressed her comittment to the role, saying:

We’re doing Red 2 next year.

This new film will have an entirely original storyline, drawn up by Jon and Erich Hoeber, who adapted Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s comic for the first picture. I expect they’ll have had some kind of conversation with Ellis, at least at the spitballing stage, though how involved he’d actually want to be is another question altogether.

Do you want to see a sequel to RED? If so, who do you want to see direct the sequel if Schwentke doesn't (which is likely)? Sound off your thoughts below in the usual place.

Yeah, I'd like to see a sequel to RED. Like Hellsing said, the first one was fun, and it had a great ensemble. I have no problem with them making more.

Besides, that will make it the first non-Batman DC published property to get a sequel since the 80's.

I loved the first one, but I don't think a sequel would work. Was there more than 1 comic book story for RED? I just saw one once, which the movie was based on.

Good. I am glad to see more of DC Comics movies being put out, I always look forward to Batman but they have many other titles as well and I also look forward to others such as this. With The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, Red 2 & possible other projects on the way this could get really, really good & interesting ;)

As much as I loved the first one, they shouldn't do another. I think that the film was great as a standalone. This would be the same as doing a sequel to "The Losers", in my opinion.

@wolverinesfury- I don't think her character died. I think she was shot, but didn't die. I think a sequel would be great fun. Loved the first one. The part where Bruce Willis stepped out of the car while the car was still spinning was one of the coolest action shots that I have ever seen.

I'll watch it. John Malkovich stole the show, shich he doesn't do often. If they leave it alone it would be fine because it was a great movie. Adding more may ruin the effect, if you know what I mean.

um did it warrant a sequel? the movie got so predictable I walked out. that and willis yet again played the same tired old character he's always played, with the same tongue in cheek weak delivery. no sequel.

The first Red was ok, it could have been much better. Hopefully they improve the story, and bring back Morgan Freeman damn it.
