AVATAR VFX Artist Claims Director James Cameron Exploited Those Working On The Movie With Unpaid Overtime

A VFX artist who worked on 2009's Avatar has lashed out at filmmaker James Cameron, claiming the director took advantage of his team by making them work unpaid extra hours in order to finish the movie...

Avatar returned to this theaters this past weekend, grossing an impressive $30.5 million at the global box office. The blockbuster's success proved, even 13 years after it was first released, that there's still plenty of interest in the world of Pandora. Unsurprisingly, excitement for the sequel is now higher than it's ever been.

However, ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water's release this December, a VFX artist who worked on the 2009 record-breaking blockbuster has taken aim at filmmaker James Cameron.

In a series of now-deleted Tweets (shared via SFFGazette.com), Nick Sinnott said, "A fun thing about working on the VFX for Avatar was being the only major department not unionised and having Cameron exploit that fact with endless unpaid revision then win a bunch of Oscars."

"I'm not under NDA about this because the studio I worked for at the time no longer exists," he added. "Guess why."

It goes without saying that these are some very serious claims, and ones that Cameron has not responded to at this time. We're guessing he probably won't as these comments would be easy to dismiss as being from just one disgruntled VFX artist. However, we have no reason not to take Sinnot at his word, though he's since made his Twitter account private.

If true, others in the industry are likely unwilling to speak out against the director for fear of losing work, especially now he's partnered up with Disney. Sinnott's comments also highlight larger issues in the VFX industry, including how unpaid overtime and crunch can have an impact on those working on the movies we watch (Marvel Studios has similarly come under fire lately).

Avatar was a movie that obviously featured a lot of VFX, so we shouldn't be surprised that there was a lot of extra work that went into it. Whether it's true that Cameron exploited staff remains to be seen, though we do hope the filmmaker eventually decides to share his side of the story.

Avatar is now back in theaters and Avatar: The Way of Water is set to finally be released on December 16.

I wouldn't be surprised for it to be true. Cameron is well-known as being a dick, one of those "the ends justify the means"-type director.

It's about time VFX artist unionize though.

“The Life of Pi” should have been a sign of things. Visual effects won the academy award but the company that did them went bankrupt

Oh come now, no doubt everyone involved got a nice check from that $30m the movie just got.

That's shitty. They probably got their initial contract amount but likely didn't account for the out of contract work. Lame.

How are VFX artist going to unionize if they don't decide to unionize? All sympathies to the artists, but don't they hold the power to stand together and say "no more"?

@Fares - Unions don't work when the work can be shopped overseas with ease.

Legit question here but is Cameron in charge of paying these people? Wouldn’t that be a studio (Fox) thing?
PapaSpank54
PapaSpank54 - 9/28/2022, 9:03 PM
@thedrudo - it depends. A guy like Cameron is gonna be deeply involved in the process, and his word on the VFX is gonna dictate their workload. So he comes in saying "nah nah nah you're gonna have to redo all this this and this!" then they don't really get a choice in the matter.
VFX to my knowledge, like a lot of post production jobs in Hollywood, don't typically pay by the hour. They likely got a flat rate that might have seemed great at first but didn't account for months worth of crunch time.
James might not sign their checks (Fox would have) but this illustrates his lack of care for the people that realistically made his Fern Gully remake the biggest movie ever. They deserved more than a flat rate that didn't encompass all the work they put in when that work is literally what people like and remember the movie for.

@thedrudo - Well not exactly because i'm pretty sure he's an executive producer. It's basically understanding that there are loopholes in the contract hat may allow for infinite revisions and then abusing that

@PapaSpank54 - Makes sense. Here's a Cameron story that I have to assume is true because of the source.

I studied film and one of my professors worked directly with Cameron on Terminator 2 and a few other projects. I guess during meetings, he loved to eat popcorn and he had someone who he would specifically call over during these meetings - and he would wipe his dirty popcorn fingers on their shirt. I wonder how he is today, but from the sounds of it, he's pretty deep inside of his own ass.

@thedrudo - that's [frick]in insane. I believe it though.
I had a teacher that worked with Micheal Bay, who would fire PAs all the time, so she told them to go change into a new outfit and the come right back to work and finish the shoot 😂 worked every time.
Hopefully Hollywood will continue to disavow that kind of abusive egotism. Being a genius filmmaker does not require being a cock helmet.

I don't think the director is responsible for how much the VFX department gets paid and what time they finish their projects, otherwise the VFX companies should be blaming all the director equally instead of some blaming directors and others, if not most, blaming the producing companies like Marvel Studios. I could genuinely be missing something though.
