CHRONICLE Sequel Focusing On A Group Of Female College Students Officially In Development

In a surprising development, it's come to light that Disney/20th Century Studios is developing a sequel to 2012's Chronicle, with the story set to focus on a group of female college students.

2012's found-footage sci-fi/superhero movie Chronicle proved to be a surprise hit for 20th Century Fox, and put stars Michael B. Jordan and Dane DeHaan on Hollywood's radar in a big way. Though there was some talk of a follow-up at the time, most of us assumed those plans must have fallen by the wayside.

However, it's now come to light that a sequel is officially in development at Disney-owned 20th Century Studios.

During an interview with Forbes, Jungle Cruise producer John Davis revealed that Chronicle 2 will be set ten years after the original and focus on a new group of characters.

“We’re working on Chronicle 2 right now, and I think it’s going to be great," Davis told the site. "We’re working on it at Fox (20th Century Studios). It’s going to give us a chance to tell the story in a different way. We’re going to tell it from the female point of view. It will have been ten years since the event happened in Seattle, and a lot of it’s going to deal with fake news and real news and cover-ups."

"More interestingly, it’s the next generation getting these powers that are corruptive," he continued. "These are young women just finishing college, they are empowered, and this is their journey. I mean, what a new and interesting story you can tell there.”

This is certainly an unexpected development, but the first film grossed over $120 million on a $12 million budget, so the studio is clearly hoping to catch lightning in a bottle again. Davis didn't reveal whether a writer or director are attached, but it's probably safe to assume that the original team of Josh Trank and Max Landis will not be involved!

What do you guys make of this news? Would you have any interest in a Chronicle sequel after all these years?

@mastakilla39 - I don’t know if they’re comparable ghostbusters was a beloved franchise with established characters where as chronicle was a semi decent movie that came out back in like 2012? I don’t think people will care about this sequel to begin with let alone switching the perspective characters Gender

@Spagett - I just don't see the point. Chronicle was already kinda the male version of the craft. Why not just do that again?

And I mean decently, considering the craft sequel we got.

@manofillintent1 - Chronicle had great reviews, made millions at the box office, and had a huge demand for a sequel like Ghostbusters 4 but Chronicle 2 was just never made. So instead of trying to get everyone back on board and do a proper sequel, the movie studio is just trying to cash in on an all female reboot like Ghostbusters 2017. The parallels of these gender swapped sequels and reboots is the same with any franchise in that 99% of them are terribly disappointing and hurts the brand.

@mastakilla39 - I don’t know as long as they expand the lore and don’t just remake the first but with females it’ll be fine, I don’t feel it was fundamental to follow the characters from the first SPOILERS............ the one that was left anyway. I remember Fox not wanting to make Max’s sequel script and he’s f*cked his career since then, and as for Josh Trank? He wouldn’t get hired even if he actually wanted to return

Hope Alex Russell returns, and ideally they delve into where/what the powers came from, always intrigued me in the first film

Is Landis involved in this one? his writing is hit and miss, but i understand he's apparantly a scumbag.

Maybe i'll check it out without being loud about it

Could be redeemer for Trank, but i'd imagine he's no longer going to be involved with the company formally known as Fox

They should look into doing a female version of other titles too, just imagine Ghostbusters.

Empowering.

This idea seems very forced. Why not just do an original sci-fi/thriller with an all female cast?

If they want to do a legit sequel to Chronicles, it should be about Matt traveling around the world to learn more about the origin of his powers, like something akin to Superman: Birthright.

They also should’ve done a sequel way sooner.

@mgeoff88 - yeah. This is basically the problem with modern Hollywood. It's just a bunch of "popular character but a girl now" or "now they're a minority" instead of just having an original character. I don't get how that's empowering at all.

I hate how studios don't accept new women-lead projects unless they are based on established IP. They call it a "safety net". Because execs lack confidence in female talent.

This doesn't inherently sound like a bad idea, but the way they're selling it sure sounds like they're just doing it as a half-assed cringefest designed to pander.

"These women are empowered, and this is their journey. I mean, what a new and interesting story you can tell there."

Is it though??

I mean... Is your premise for your movie really "subversive" and "transgressive" when literally almost every other tentpole feature has the exact same premise? I.e. "Attractive white woman is empowered and badass."

"what a new and interesting story"

Exploiting feminism to make profit out of remaking the same story story isn't my idea of new and interesting...

A subversion of expectations could be making it a commentary on woke culture and feminism.

@VoiceofReason - You gotta wait for the low budget Ben Shapiro produced remake starring Kevin Sorbo and Gina Carano. We'll get there.
