HELLBOY Director Guillermo Del Toro Has Discussed STAR WARS Movie Ideas With Kathleen Kennedy & John Knoll

A Guillermo del Toro-helmed Star Wars movie has been something fans of the prolific director have wanted to see for some time now, and it looks like something might just be in the pipeline...

Could we really see Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak) direct a Star Wars movie? There's been whispers of his potential involvement with the ever-expanding galaxy far, far away for years now, but it looks like it might actually become a reality... someday, anway.

While speaking to Collider, del Toro brought up the fact that he is often rumored to be attached to movies that were never actually in development, and because of this he's hesitant to say too much about Star Wars - however, he does confirm that he has met with Lucasfilm to discuss ideas for future films.

"I will not comment on this, because then somebody will say, ‘Oh, Guillermo’s doing [Star Wars]!’ and I look like a kook. Neil Gaiman once said that, ‘I’d love to write Doctor Strange with Guillermo,’ and then all of a sudden on my IMDb I had ‘Doctor Strange’ [listed]. But saying all of that as a caveat, I would say there’s some characters that are great, and I have talked to Kathy Kennedy and John Knoll about ideas. But you know, I want to do my sh*t. I want to do my sh*t, I want to do it first, and I’m veering a lot towards animation. I love animation.”

The man always has a lot of projects on the go so even if there is something brewing, it'll probably be a very long time before we see it - but if del Toro was to get behind the camera for a Star Wars flick, which characters would you most like to see him tackle?

Didn't he say he'd do a Jabba The Hut film? Eh...

So he isn't interested because he wouldn't have enough control. Makes sense.

Shame though, I would love Guillermo on Star Wars.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of the all time greatest films

Anyway, like I said before, this would be pretty awesome. I haven't seen all of his movies, but the ones I HAVE seen I either like or love (except for Crimson Peak).

@MUTO123 - Crimson Peak was a huge let down for me. While it was a good movie and looked great visually, I was kind of expecting it to be an actual horror movie. The best part about it was Chastain.

@Menks123 - I mostly thought it was just kinda dull and that the mystery was SUPER predictable (and I'm usually not very good at guessing those kind of things). But like you said, Chastain was great (and so was Hiddleston) and the visuals were top-notch.

He pretty much says nothing will happen by comparing it to the Niel Gaiman/Dr Strange thing. And here we are, doing the same as back then.

Nooooo! Star wars movies have no shortage of possible directors, but who else will finally make the Haunted Mansion the right way?

Darth Vader solo film set between Episode 3 and 4 directed by Guillermo Del Toro 🤔

@MrFridayNights - I see what you're going for and wouldn't hate it, but I think I want (and this would never happen) a PG-13 slasher movie with Vader as this unstoppable Jason Vorhees style entity chasing down the last of the Jedi who survived order 66

In a related story GDT is officially signed on to direct every movie that will ever be made from now until forever.

Yes please. I still say that Tarantino is the best choice for Boba Fett but I know that won't happen. I hope the anthology films all have distinctive sub genres, the main episodes are obviously always going to be space operas/ Space fantasies but with Rogue One being a War film, hopefully Han Solo is action adventure in the style of Indiana jones or uncharted if not a heist movie, and Boba Fett should be a space western and revenge story telling either how he came to work for Janna or what happened after he escaped the sarlac pit

Actually now thinking about Hellboy and Pan's Labrynth use of practical effects/creature design I'd want him to do a straight up fantasy film in the Star Wars universe. Lets get some epic Lord of the Rings style balls out film somewhere in the outer rim that doesn't feature Jedi or much if any advanced technology but a race super force sensitive and superstitious up against like a Mythosaur or giant Rancorbor something like in Dedolation of Smaug

@Ha1frican - I could see Del Toro doing something similar to what you're talking about but more of a prequel to the whole Saga. A SW flic that would look like a sci-fi mythology film that deals with the beginning of the jedi, rise of the sith and discovery of the force.

This would be so far before the events of episode 1 and even the old Republic that as a director he could have plenty of creative freedom even though he would still have to account for the movies that already exist.

@fanDomX - true like the origins of the Sith and Jedi before light sabers or any of that with races we've never seen before because they've either evolved or died out

@Ha1frican - YES! A Star Wars version of Tolkien's Silmarillion. Something like this would probably need more than a trilogy.

@fanDomX - @fanDomX - true but I'd love a spinoff saga and I'm sure Disney would too. I actually would also like Jackson to take a shot at a spinoff series too. The guy makes epic films and although he did stretch the hobbit a bit thin anything with the Quality of the first Middle Earth trilogy or the world building of King Kong (check out the art book about the wildlife on the island it cover 1000's of years of the food chain and adaptation on the island) would be welcome in a galaxy far far away

@Ha1frican - I'm with you on P Jackson doing a SW flic. Funny you bring him up because Peter was always my choice to do a Yoda spinoff if Disney ever decide to go that route. Anything SW from PJ would be cool though.

GDT might have made a wonderful Star Wars film. I could see him doing a film about the Jedi pre prequels (or maybe even the Sith). It's a shame he might not do it but the reasoning is fair I guess. I actually heard he might want to make a Pacific Rim animated series, which would be amazing.

Eh...let's hope not. His films are certainly rich with visuals. Hopefully Star Wars is more than that? Some of the subject matter he's associated with is fun. But his films lack the feeling that the lead characters are actually in peril. I don't feel a sense of weight. Is Doug Jones wanting to do Star Wars or something?
