The moment Lucasfilm announced that director Rian Johnson would write and helm a new trilogy of Star Wars films, speculation went wild. The films, which will be separate from the Skywalker saga and feature brand new characters could take influence from a host of material, and many calls were made for an adaptation of the famed Knights of the Old Republic video game.
Johnson, however, has now squashed those hopes yet again, confirming that he wants to explore the uncharted territory that Star Wars has to offer. "Oh, [the fans] love Knights of the Old Republic. I played that game when it first came out and it was like, god, I loved it," Johsnon told Mashable. "Yeah, that’s a fantastic game. And I understand it, the instinct to automatically go to something that you know and love, that you’ve already seen. To me, what’s really fun is the notion of what new stuff are we gonna see, what new stories can we tell?"
Of course, this decision makes a wealth of sense; if fans want the Knights story, they are fully able to relive the experience by playing the game. With full creative freedom to craft new stories, characters, and adventures, it's highly likely fans won't be seeing much from the Legends stories make its way back into Lucasfilm and Disney's canon, though there have been some exceptions recently, such as Admiral Thrawn being reintroduced on Star Wars: Rebels.
