SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Is Set For A Surprise Screening At The Cannes Film Festival On April 15

Looks like we'll be getting those initial reactions to Solo: A Star Warts Story a little sooner than expected, as the iconic space-smuggler's origin tale is set to premiere at The Cannes Film Festival later this month.

According to Deadline, Ron Howard's prequel film will screen on April 15, a week before its scheduled red carpet premiere in LA and 10 days before it goes on general release.

This will be the first time a Star Wars flick has screened at Cannes since 2005's Revenge of the Sith played out of competition at the festival.

I thought Cannes was always in May?

This year it says the dates are May 8-19, 2018.

@L0RDbuckethead - I assume the April mention is a mistake, since it says that this is 10 days before the film’s scheduled release.

@Chewtoy - Oh ok, that makes sense, I didn't even pick up on that. Good catch.

I’m guessing that Disney is happy with the product and looking to start turning around the buzz. It’s a far cry from hiding the film until just before the release.

10 days before Infinity War's earliest showing... they realize it's more difficult to hype Star Wars when Infinity War is right there. It'll be overshadowed easily.

@Scarilian - It will actually premiere after Infinity War comes out.

Well, it doesn’t sound like much of a surprise now.

Off-topic: There was a WW2 production sheet released today and it has Chris Pine on it... Has he been confirmed to return yet, or is this the first?

@L0RDbuckethead - WHAT? No! That man was a legend. Prince of the Sun, Grave of Fireflies, as well as his role at Ghibli. He will be missed.

L0RDbuckethead - 4/5/2018, 4:26 PM
@MrDandy - Yeah, it's unfortunate but 82 is a long life and he left us with some breathtaking animation. If anyone hasn't seen Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke or My Neighbor Totoro you should definitely check them out ASAP. They're pretty damn good.

@L0RDbuckethead - He has indeed. Unfortunately all the films you posted he produced but didn't direct. He has a lot of directed films under his belt too. Horus Prince of the Sun is a hidden gem.

L0RDbuckethead - 4/5/2018, 9:42 PM
@MrDandy - Yeah I haven't seen any of his directorial works but many of the ones he's produced, usually directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

@L0RDbuckethead - Grave of Fireflies is a hard one to watch because of the subject matter, but an amazing drama. It's great. Check that one out. Pom Poko and Only Yesterday are also his.
