STAR WARS Franchise Crosses $4 Billion As THE LAST JEDI Nears $940 Million At The Global Box Office

As Star Wars: The Last Jedi gets closer to that $1 billion milestone, it's been confirmed that Disney has now made back the $4 billion it spent to acquire the Star Wars franchise from Lucasfilm in 2012...

With Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi now approaching $940 million worldwide and well on its way to hitting the $1 billion mark, THR is reporting that the franchise has taken in $4.06 billion overall, eclipsing the sum Disney shelled out to Lucasfilm to acquire Star Wars back in 2012.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI SPOILERS - 7 Major Questions We Have Leading Into EPISODE IX

This means that the combined ticket sales of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Stars Wars: The Force Awakens have already covered the cost of the acquisition - though this doesn't account for the hundreds of millions spent to produce and market the movies, of course.

With the recent 21st Century Fox buyout, Disney seems to be well on its way to world domination. Do you see a problem with this, or so you welcome our new mouse-eared overlords with open arms?

"though this doesn't account for the hundreds of millions spent to produce and market the movies, of course"

That will probably already be made up in merch sales alone.

[frick], Kathleen needs to go now. Disney can't afford yet another billion dollar film.

@Trumpool -

Eh... a billion dollar film is not as important as word of mouth and audience division for a franchise as massive as this. This is very likely the Batman V Superman of the franchise, a movie that would've made them considerably more if it was actually good. It's left the audience disliking the movie and not interested in seeing the next film.

For example, Disney making two massive Star Wars themed areas 'Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge' in California and Florida. Granted they will make money, but turn away enough of the fanbase with dumb decisions, awful script, stupid characters, etc... and it'll have a massive ripple effect

@Scarilian - the movie is projected to make 1.6 billion dollars. you don't get there without repeat viewings from people who like it. where people like you get it in their head that this movie is hated is beyond me and beyond all logic and reason. the film is clearly a hit with most people and not with a vocal minority.

@JustAChillFan -

That was the argument made for Suicide Squad, which was summarily dismissed.

@JustAChillFan -

"the movie is projected to make 1.6 billion dollars."

- Originally it was projected for $2.2 billion.
- Then it was projected for $1.9 billion.
- Now according to you it's projected for $1.6 billion

Each week it's getting projected a lower amount, I've seen some box office sites predict it may not even earn more than $1.4 billion.

Regardless, it's a disappointment compared to what it would have earned if it was not a complete piece of trash.

"the film is clearly a hit with most people and not with a vocal minority."

For the first week the hashtag 'The Last Jedi Awful' was trending on twitter.

Large fanbases on Youtube including many insanely popular Youtubers dislike this movie and the commenters are agreeing with them. You can find 100 videos saying how bad the movie is for every 1 positive review (and even those mention how the movie is dumb)
