"We are what they grow beyond." Yoda's appearance to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi came as a surprise to many fans, and while his role was brief, the Jedi Master still had plenty of wisdom to impart to the jaded Luke.

In a recent interview with IGN, Yoda puppeteer and voice actor Frank Oz explained how his reprisal came about, and how surprised he was that he'd be puppeteering again. “Several years ago I had lunch with Rian [Johnson], and Rian asked if I could do Yoda in the next Star Wars, and I said ‘Sure,’ because I thought it was just CGI. And then [Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy, who I’ve known for quite a while, who’s fantastic, she called me about it and then I realized that it wasn’t CGI, that it was actually the character,” Oz said.

“I said, ‘Kathy, do you have any idea what’s going to happen here? This is tough!’ and she said ‘That’s okay, let’s do it.’ So, you know, the workshop made him and everything, and did a fantastic job,” Oz continued.

Accepting the role meant keeping it a secret, and so Oz made sure to formulate a cover story as to why he was at Pinewood Studios during the shoot. “I was told that that was going to be the surprise of the movie, so when I went to Pinewood I had to be a secret there. Although if people saw me… people DID see me, but if they questioned me it would have been fine because I shot Little Shop of Horrors ... there, and could have just said I had some meetings for movies. But the idea was to keep me off the credits. I was asked, ‘Could you have your name off the poster?’ and I said ‘Sure.’ So the idea was that that would be the surprise.”

As for the possibility of a Yoda-centric spinoff film? “You know what, I keep hearing that and I know nothing about it,” Oz confirmed.

This scene may or may not have made me a bit emotional.

@RorMachine - i think it played upon on how wise yoda is/was...... and it's just basic common sense

@knocturnalzen10 - I mean emotional in a good/nostalgic way, not angry!

"The greatest teacher, failure is. Luke, we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters."

I absolutely loved that scene.

I also had no idea that it was coming -- I actually did a surprisingly great job at not having anything spoiled for me with The Last Jedi, which is saying something as I saw the film in late January. I was able to go in pretty blind which is very rare for a film like that when you don't see it early in it's run.

I loved how Yoda was his more playful mischievous self, similar to how he was in Empire, at the start anyway. One of, if not my favourite part of The Last Jedi.

I was thinking about Yoda in Empire Strikes Back the other day and the fact that R2D2 knows exactly who he is and Yoda knows exactly who R2 is, so essentially these two experienced war veterans who are friends decide that upon seeing each other for the first time in like 20 years to just put on a weird 2 man show for Luke.

@FromACertainPOV - Yeah, pretty much r2d2 has the most knowledge of war. I wonder of the weight of the carries, so many dead, His master became a sif, the war he fought was lost, and the next war victory was overshadowed by the first order.

@FromACertainPOV
Not exactly, after ep III, they erased R2D2 and C-3PO's memory.
And Yoda...well, he was old af and didn't remember shit i guess! :P
So it's not like they decided to put on a show.

@FromACertainPOV - I wouldn't mind it based on the films, I don't think Yoda would have payed much time to R2D2 (who after is just any other astromech in-universe).
However in the Clone Wars they literally travelled to Dagobah together.

My assumption is perhaps through the years between RotS and ANH, R2s memory banks were deleted/corrupted and he just wasn't upgraded/fixed.

Or R2 was made not to speak about Yoda, to protect obi, yoda, Leia and Luke. That's how I view Chewbacca not talking about Yoda to Han or during the original films; he respect Yoda and what he did for Kashyyyk, and doesn't want to risk his life by revealing Yoda survived Order 66.

@Doomsday8888 - They didn't mind wipe R2 D2. I'm pretty sure they make a point in ROTS to state that he DOESN'T get his memory wiped which is why he remembers his old master Obi Wan Kenobi in ANH and C3P0 doesn't.

@StormXmen123 - Oh I don't mind it or really care at all, they're films and were made up as they go along. I just find it funny.

@Doomsday8888 - No they did not erase R2D2's memory. If you recall, at the end of E3 Bail Organa said "have the protocol droid's memory erased." He made no mention of them doing that to R2.

R2 still retained his memories.

@FromACertainPOV - that is correct. R2 never had his memory erased.

“Page turners they’re not”

Love that scene. I was also surprised to see puppet yoda instead of CG yoda.

@JohnGrayson - Say what you will about the sequel film's content, but the decision to go on location and do as much with practical effects and in camera was such a great and welcome choice.

The Director and the Jedi is great at showing just how much work, craft and logistics that goes in to making a film of this size with puppets and animatronics etec

A lot of bad decisions in TLJ. But using YODA was probably near the top. A complete missed opportunity to use ANAKIN to speak to his SON in his most dire moments. And who better to speak to Luke about learning from failures.
LEVITIKUZ
LEVITIKUZ - 3/21/2018, 6:33 AM
@IronGenesis - Except Anakin has no relationship with Luke...

Yoda was the one who trained Yoda. Yoda was the one who Luke knew.

Anakin is his father but Luke has no connection to Anakin like he does with Yoda

I mean sure Luke saw his father in ROTJ but if we saw him in TLJ, it would be like “who are you?” to Luke because he has no connection to his father like he does to Yoda & Ben
