During last year's Disney Investor Day, Lucasfilm dropped an elaborate announcement video with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins revealing she would take the helm of Rogue Squadron. However, The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed that due to scheduling issues on Jenkins' side, it will no longer be possible for cameras to start rolling in 2022.
Pre-production was supposed to kick off by the end of this year, but the Star Wars movie has now been taken off the production schedule and is unlikely to make that December 22, 2023 release date.
Not even the trade seems to know what Jenkins' other commitments are, but the hope is that once the filmmaker is free, she will be able to return to Rogue Squadron. We don't know what this means for Wonder Woman 3; that was supposed to follow the director's trip to a Galaxy Far, Far Away, but could now come a little sooner - or later! - than expected. Jenkins also has that Cleopatra movie for Paramount which is set to star Gal Gadot.
We haven't had a Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker, and it's unclear whether Lucasfilm has another project they can release in Rogue Squadron's place (Taika Waititi and Kevin Feige are developing separate movies, but no one knows how far along they are). Lots of content is coming to Disney+, but at this rate, there will have been half a decade between big screen Star Wars adventures.
Jenkins once parted ways with Marvel Studios over creative differences after being tapped to director Thor: The Dark World, so hopefully this isn't the case with Rogue Squadron. It's definitely odd that no one knows what else the director is committed to, anyway.
Keep checking back here for updates.
