THE LAST JEDI Director Rian Johnson "Excited" About Limitless Freedom Of His STAR WARS Trilogy

Rian Johnson, who has been chosen to create an entirely new story within the Star Wars universe to be told over a trilogy of films, talks about the freedom of his project and how it came to be.

Director Rian Johnson is currently doing the press rounds for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but naturally he's been asked about the newly announced spin-off trilogy he's been tasked with overseeing. Despite what you would imagine to be looming pressure over having to create an entirely brand new story-arc in the Star Wars franchise, Johnson actually reiterated he's excited about the complete freedom he has.

"Right now there's all the freedom in the world," he told IGN. "That's the whole thing that's exciting to me is let's go some new places, let's meet some new folks, let's see what else is out there. Let's have one story told over three films in this galaxy with no limitations. It's pretty exciting."

Obviously, it's far too early for any specific details, but Johnson's new trilogy is said to be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga. The trilogy is expected to introduce "new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored."

Johnson's statement to IGN echo previous comments made last month when he praised "the idea of doing a new story on the big canvas of three movies in this world."

As for how this project came about, Johnson told IGN, "We all just had a really good time working together. I know for us, that was a big part of it. We were getting to the end of it and Kathy Kennedy and Bob Iger and Alan Horn, Alan Berkman, all the folks at Disney, we were just sad that this was coming to an end. We were like, 'How do we figure out some way to keep working together?' That's when I pitched the idea of a new trilogy with a new story. That seemed really exciting for me."

Unfortunately, it'll probably be quite a while before we get our first glimpse into Johnson's galaxy far, far away. After the release of The Last Jedi, there's Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018, followed by Star Wars: Episode IX (directed by J.J. Abrams) in 2019.

Are you excited for Johnson's Star Wars spin-off trilogy?

Disney knows they have a monster in their hands with TLJ that they have given this man a trilogy. I do hope we get the Old Republic.

I would rather we get more stuff like Brick and Looper from Johnson over Star Wars.

You could do a whole series of movies based loosely on the X-Wing series. Just a series of misfits in an elite squadron with some aliens, some Force-sensitives, some Corellians, and whoever. Exploring a bit more of the life of people working on one of those big carrier ships. The broader war effort. The (hopefully fleshed out) politics of the galaxy. Bounty hunters and civil wars and discovering old Sith temples. The works.

The works.

Too bad the Dark Horse comics aren’t cannon anymore, I’d love to see a Tales Of The Jedi trilogy. Show me some Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider action!

@AnthonyVonGeek - Yes! Finally! Someone else has read these stories! Have you listened to the audio drama adaptions as well? Amazing!

I’d even go back further though. In several of the TOTJ Comics whenever there was s story being told or s Holocron was imparting knowledge they would show really ancient Jedi and Dark Jedi. Who used Force Charged Swords as their weapons.

I’ve always posted if you went this far back and kept several of those ideas...you would have a Game Of Thrones Star Wars Movie.

This kind of bums me out....

He did such original work with Looper, Brick, and Brothers Bloom

Want to see more of that

You could also tell a Lost-in-Space type of story, following a small group of people as they explore or lose themselves in the Unknown Regions. It would allow
Johnson the freedom to do some crazy things and visit some interesting worlds without too many repercussions reaching the rest of the galaxy and affecting the flow of the canon.

What if someone actually had the balls to set the Star Wars universe into its own future. The current movie are “a long time ago...” imagine them being advanced to our recent past and their far off future and paths collide.
I wonder where they would go with that?
Just a thought.

Idk this seems to happen a lot in the fanboy community. People get behind director because of their previous work and when things go the way we wanted the director becomes a hack. Ask Joss Whedon about that lol. if Marvel would have gave Joss Whedon the keys to unlimited freedom for a trilogy of Avengers films after the first one we would all be supporting him then Age of Ultron came out and he somehow became the enemy.
I’m excited for the last jedi but I know as much as we talk about we want new and different if Rian Johnson makes things too different well I hate to see the wrath on this site in the next year lol. Even the cast came to Johnson’s like you sure you want to do this. But hey only time will tell.

@LastAvenger99 - Yep exactly. everyone yells for something new until they get it and it doesn't match what they've envisioned in their head all these years. Then the torches and pitchforks come out.
