ALIEN: COVENANT Sequel Would Have Finally Answered The Mystery Behind The Original Xenomorph Eggs

The Alien prequels offered more questions than answers, but director Ridley Scott has confirmed that his planned Alien: Covenant follow-up would have revealed the secrets behind those Xenomorph eggs...

Work on Alien: Awakening (the follow-up to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant) halted when Disney acquired Fox, and given the response to the previous instalment, it seems highly likely that the franchise will eventually be rebooted. However, we've previously heard that this third prequel was going to see the Engineers hunting David for revenge after he wiped out their race.

While you might still be wondering how that would have tied into Alien, director Sir Ridley Scott has now explained that the movie was set to finally bridge the gap between the prequels and his original sci-fi classic, explaining the origin of those Xenomorph eggs in the process.

"I still think there’s a lot of mileage in Alien, but I think you’ll have to now re-evolve," the filmmaker explained. "What I always thought when I was making the first one [was] why would a creature like this be made and why was it travelling in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs."

"What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That’s the thing to question - who, why, and for what purpose is the next idea, I think," Scott concluded.

In other words, after delving into the overly convoluted creation of those eggs, Alien: Awakening would have revealed why they were on the ship that was discovered in Alien. Scott's exploration of this world wasn't what anyone expected, and while he clearly believes the franchise needs to evolve, most fans would just like to see it return to its horror roots.

Whether Scott will get the chance to tell this story obviously remains to be seen...

Good riddance. Covenant was terrible, one of the worst movies I've ever seen in a theater. Some scenes went into "it's so bad it's good" territory, those unintentionally funny moments were the only things I liked about it.

@Archgoat - and then they promised answers in the sequel. Not only did we not get any but the 2nd was even worse

Would it have also explained why the prequels had better technology in the ships then the original Alien and Aliens?🤣😜

@AnthonyVonGeek - I do wIsh these guys wouldn’t be so against making these things less smooth and overly stylish and keep it aesthetically similar to the original movies. We know you can do more these days, but sometimes less is more.

@AnthonyVonGeek - Sci-fi aesthetics are often informed by our current technology and where we see it going in 10-20 years. So there has been some suspension of disbelief when you're looking at sci-fi movies from the 70s and 80s with sequels/prequels decades later. Large buttons, pixellated displayed and CRT screens would look ridiculous to an audience with touchscreen phones in their pockets and HD flatscreen TVs at home.

The prequels were a messy disappointment! Prometheus was so confusing....and Covenant just made it worse. David "inventing" the Xenomorphs ?? when they'd been around for thousands of years. They should just let it die. I would live to see a tv show set after Aliens ...that wud be frickin rad!

@emeraldtaurus - Yeah, Covenant kind of screwed things up. In Prometheus, when they first go into the "egg room" with all the canisters lined up very obviously like the facehugger eggs, there was even a mural of a full blown Xenomorph on the wall. Which means the Engineers had already created Xenomorphs long before David, or the Xenomorphs were a natural race from somewhere that the Engineers replicated with the black ooze, or were trying to replicate, for whatever reason.

So having David creatw them in Covenant seemed really weird.

@CorndogBurglar - forgot about that one. Very good point. I was kinda hoping that would fix that inconsistent storyline in the nxt one.

My take is David didn’t invent xenos, but perhaps altered their evolution or biology. I think he studied all of the engineers data and then he applied his learnings using the covenant crew as his test subjects.
Any way I would have been much more invested in another Elizabeth Shaw story and congruently blomkamps Aliens sequel

I loathed covenant, was flabbergasted that Ridley would reduce the Xenomorph to a terrible looking cgi mess jumping all over the place when he’s always reflected on how special Giger and his original design was, I don’t know where the series is gonna go but I would personally love to see Vincent wards Alien 3

I always thought it was more interesting to leave where the xenomorphs came from ambiguous

@noahthegrand - Yeah, I can't disagree with that. Or just make them a natural race from somewhere out in the galaxy. Like in the comic series that delved into their homeworld with the different cored Xenos.

Alien 3 was originally going to feature Colonial Marines going to the Xeno homeworld, until the studio made them change it. That would have changed the entire course of the frqnchise, and considering how bad Alien 3 and Resurrection were, you can only imagine it woukd have been for the better.

They said the same thing about Prometheus and Covenant. Scott was clearly more interest in creating his own weird space mythology than making more alien movies, which would have been fine, if they were any good beyond the visuals.

Unsure if Disney/20th century studios “Still not use to calling it that for that longest time calling it Fox” would let Ridley have creative control because they’re very strict with Preserving their bottom line. Hope we get a final Alien prequel, though Blomkamp has become disheartened over his project being sideline Id be curious as to how it could’ve turned out for better or for worse. Could the final prequel be titled
Alien: Acheron Both tying in the mythology religious name of the ship as well as a reference to LV-426’s original name.

[frick] Ridley Scott. He used his power to nix the Neil Blomkamp Alien movie. He didn't want it to compete with Promethieus in theaters. So we got his confusing story line in Alien movies nobody was demanding instead of the true sequel to Aliens that would have had Ripley, Hicks, Newt and Bishop together the way it should have been all those years ago.

Covenant was such a shit movie I choose not to consider it canon along with Alien 3, Resurrection, and the AVP movies. Now instead I have been coming up with my AVP universe where Newt lives, gets adopted by Ripley and Hicks, grows up to become a Marine, and meet the descendant of Danny Glover's Character from Predator 2 played by John Boyega. Hey Disney, hit me up.

I know not everyone lives Covenant but I sure do hate that we are now just one movie short of closing the loop. I would have loved to see that one movie full that last gap and then the future movies look to the future.

@TheJustinHammer - I thought before that there was supposed to be two more but if Ridley Scott changed it to one no matter the reason I wanted to see it.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 6/4/2020, 11:28 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - Exactly. We might as well finish the story of David. Ultimately, that's what the Prequels are all about: man creates a robot, who destroys the putative creator of man, robot seeks to destroy man, but man's creator destroy David first. The story-telling has been flawed to say the least, but the plot is excellent. And, I want to see this crazy robot one last time:

According to my headcanon, Alien and Aliens are the only two films that exist in this franchise. The rest can [frick] right off.

I like the prequels, specially Prometheus (Prometheus is flipping fantastic!). Ridley should have stuck to his guns for Covenant and not tried to go for a Premetheus-Alien combination that failed to excite either crowd. Stick to the Prometheus story & see were it goes with David & Rapace in the lead for the whole journey.

I do like were he was going with it, David reverse-engineers the xenomorph (into the wild organic beast seeing in Covenant), then the Engineers try for revenge by setting the genuine article (the techno-organic stalker) on Earth, but fail miserably and the rest is history. It’s wild coincidence that David just happens to hit the same design as the creators, Ridley should have stuck to the albino creature or the one at the end of Prometheus for David’s monster.

None of this was worth losing At the Mountains of Madness by Del Toro or that Blokamp Alien movie with Ripley, those looked like gems. We need Lovecraft movies.

@TheJustinHammer - It was a fricking crime! David and Shaw made a fantastic duo. And they even did it off-screen.

@8thDoctor - I had thought “ no way they didn’t learn their lesson from alien3!” But then covenants trailers came out and I immediately began losing hope. It confuses me the screenwriters just lose interest in established characters like that

Terminator and Aliens, two franchises that had back to back masterpieces and then nosedived hard. It's difficult to say which one fell further. I'd probably go with Terminator. Such a mess of a timeline with reboots, retcons, recasts, etc. At least the Alien franchise is consistently bad, and 3/4 could be considered guilty pleasures.

Yep, i'm still in the minority.

I f*cking loved the prequels, yo. :P
