Director James Cameron States This Is The Reason For The Lengthy Wait Between AVATAR Sequels

Avatar came out way back in 2009, when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was but a fledgeling child, yet there have been 23 MCU movies and we are still waiting on Avatar 2. This is why - according to Cameron.

It has officially been ten years since the first Avatar film was released and it feels like we're no closer to a sequel now than we were back then - which is odd considering the massive amount of money it made at the box office and just how long it took for it to be dethroned (thanks, Avengers: Endgame).

In a recent interview with Variety, celebrated director James Cameron opened up on the reason we haven't seen a new Avatar film yet despite claims that one has been in the works for years.

“People don’t really understand the scope and complexity of the process. It’s like making two and a half big animated films. A typical big animated film takes about four years, so, if you do the math on that, we’re kind of right on schedule for December 2021.”

Cameron goes into more detail about the process for the franchise as a whole and how the team has approached it over the past decade to prepare for what's next.

“From 2013 until now we’ve mostly designed the whole world across four new movies. We’ve written, finished scripts for all four of those films. We’ve cast them, and we’ve [performance] captured movie two, movie three, and the first part of movie four. We’re mostly done with the live-action. I’ve got a couple months in New Zealand in spring, so we’re kind of on track with what we set out to do.”

What do you think of these comments? With films as beautiful as these it's certainly likely to take a lot of time, but it has been an entire decade - is the director just making excuses?

Avatar 2 might not be scheduled to release until 2021 but you can view the trailer for the first one below!

A paraplegic marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

The first one is a GREAT movie, but jesus christ i have no interest in a sequel after its been 10 years.

I was 8 years old when the first one came out and i’ll be in my 20s when a sequel is released. It’s crazy

Sounds like Cameron have a real plan for his sequels. Good job! Quite the opposite of trash Star Wars ST-trilogy.

I enjoyed the first movie, a bit overhyped. Let's hope the sequels will be better.

Does anyone still care about Avatar at this point? I feel like this needs to be revolutionary af for people to be as interested as they were with the first film.

Having recently rewatched the film (thanks to Disney +) The movie still holds up on its technical merits.. it just needed a few more rewrites in terms of corny dialogue and an underdeveloped/uncharismatic lead. Hopefully the next films address this

Okay, but only a part of Avatar is animated so you should be subtracting that.

I don't think he's making excuses. It probably genuinely takes this long. I just don't at all see how this is worth it. The first movie sucked, it just looked pretty I guess. I couldn't wait for it to be over, no matter how advanced the CGI was.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - If you can, you should watch Manhunt: Unabomber with Sam Worthington and Paul Bettany on Netflix. It's really good and only 8 episodes.

James Cameron has yet to make a bad movie imo so if this is something he felt the need to dedicate 10 years of his life to, I'm willing to bet it'll be worth it.

Saw the first one in theater, once. That was enough. I have a feeling the second won't do as well.
