"We knew starting the movie that we didn't have a finished second or third act," the director revealed in a recent interview with
Empire Magazine. The production was shut down for several months roughly halfway through shooting in order for them to figure out how to finish off the story. While many saw this as a sign of trouble, Sonnenberg is slightly more optimistic about the risky plan.
"Was it responsible? The answer is, if this movie does as well as I think it will, it was genius. If it's a total failure, then it was a really stupid idea."
Rick Baker, the special effects make-up artist who has worked on the aliens for each of the
Men in Black movies had this to say:
"It was a crazy production. We had a writer actually on the soundstage writing the words moments before the guys had to say them. I don't think that's any way to make a movie. But I've seen a rough cut and I was actually shocked at how good it was!"
"My mood is in a really happy place," said Sonnenberg on the editing process which he reveals involves pretty much no one but him as he rushes to finish off the film in time.
Truffaut once said that that a movie is as bad as it will ever be on the day you're done filming, and what he loved about post-production is that you get to make it better again. I feel the same way: once you're done with the horrible mess of shooting a movie, it only goes uphill."
While the director is busy in the editing studio, the magazine managed to get one very interesting piece of information from Baker which potentially reveals their plans for the next movie should they decide to proceed with a fourth instalment.
"At least we've got Josh Brolin now to carry on with Tommy's part..." Be sure to pick up the latest issue for much, much more and sound off with your thoughts below.
