BOX OFFICE: HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - Part 1 Gets Biggest Opening Of The Year

This weekend Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1 broke record by scoring the biggest opening weekend with $123M at the North American box office. That´s by far more than Transformers: Age of Extinction´s $100M opening weekend. But while it is an impressive number for this year, it is worth noting that it is 22 percent lower than The Hunger Games: Catching Fire´s $158M from last year.

In fact, Box Office Mojo goes to speculate that if the movie holds up just like the previous movies, it is possible that it will end it´s run around $330M, which could leave it below Guardians of the Galaxy, but we have to consider that it has been a weak year for the box office, it doesn't´t have Imax screens and the reception was not as good as the last two movies. This could mean that Guardians of the Galaxy could be the highest grossing movie in the U.S..

Of course not everything is bad news for Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1 as it opened with an impressive $152M  at 85 international markets, that´s four percent up from Catching Fire so it is expected to get over $440M.

TW Title Weekend Gross Total Gross Week #

Even if it maintains the exact pace of Catching Fire, which is unlikely, it will still finish as the #2 movie of the year.

they should have just made one movie instead of stretching the plot out

People gripe about the last movie split, but even if this one and the last one make "only" $300 million, that's $600 million vs at most $440. I'm sure the studio was hoping for more, but it only really seems to be impacting the Domestic box office, so I'm sure they'll keep doing it.

@MexicanSuperman - Bad? No. Disappointing? Definitely. This movie has been touted as the sure thing #1 movie of the year pretty much since it was announced. It's all relative.

Second one was great, but this was just boring. It could have been covered in about 15 minutes.
