DUNE: PART 2 CinemaCon Trailer Features Paul Riding A Sandworm, Austin Butler's "Serial Killer" Feyd, & More

Though the footage wasn't released online, the first teaser trailer for Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part 2 screened at CinemaCon last night, and we have a description of what was shown right here...

Those in attendance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last night were treated to the first footage from Denis Villeneuve's Dune sequel during the Warner Bros. panel, and it sounds like the Blade Runner 2049 director has upped the ante considerably when it comes to Part 2's battle sequences.

The teaser wasn't officially released online, unfortunately, but we do have a breakdown of what was shown (via THR).

"The trailer indeed looked epic in scope, with a centerpiece being Paul’s first ride on a Sandworm and preparing for a Chrys Nife battle with Austin Butler, who joins the cast as the notorious Feyd Rautha, who appears as a bald albino in the trailer. Villeneuve described franchise newcomer Butler’s character as an “Olympic sword-master crossed with a psychotic serial killer.” The trailer concludes with Paul standing in front of thousands of Freman, raising his hands to the cheering crowd."

The footage also spotlighted Black Widow star Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, who will reportedly have a much bigger role in this movie than she does in the first book.

If you've read Frank Herbert's first Dune novel, you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Part 2, anyway, as Paul and his mother Jessica adapt to life with the Fremen and plot their revenge against the vile Baron Harkonnen, who had Paul's father Leto killed in the first film.

“Part One is more of a contemplative movie. Part Two is an action-packed, epic, war movie. It is much more dense. We went to all new locations,” said Villeneuve. “I didn’t want a feeling of repetition. It’s all new sets. Everything is new.”

Dune: Part 2's other new cast additions include the legendary Christopher Walken as The Emperor, and Lea Seydoux as Lady Margot Fenring. Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Brolin, and Dave Bautista will reprise their roles from the first film.

The synopsis reads: “Part Two will focus on Paul assembling a massive army of Fremen to combat the ruthless Harkonnen, as he essentially becomes a mythical messiah figure to the inhabitants of Arrakis.”

Dune: Part Two was recently pushed back from October 20, 2023 to November 17, 2023.

I didn't think the 1st one would be my proverbial cup of tea. Now I can't wait for the 2nd.

As someone who has read the books, I thought the previous movie was a fantastic adaptation.

Florence & co seem like perfect casting for their roles too.

@MrDandy -

Denis is quoted as stating the next one will be an EPIC War Movie (vs "Contemplative", like 'Part 1'), shot in 💯 (!!) percent IMAX

At least the majority of us on this site agree on one thing, Dune 1 was great and part two will revolutionize Cinema!

As someone who hasn't read the books, I don't understand the hype around the first movie at all. It was basically a three-hours long set-up movie, which didn't even make me particularly interested to find out what they were setting-up.

@FinnishDude -

I actually get your perspective

"Dune" is actually considered unadaptable/unfilmable, for extremely valid reasons

I discovered "Dune" immediately after completing "Lord of the Rings" (in Novel form)

I never expected ANYTHING like what Peter Jackson brought to screen, in full force

I've watched and rewatched Lynch's version frequently and enjoy immersing myself in Herbert's lore, but the SCALE (philosophically and ecologically) that Frank Herbert explores is obsessively immense, mind-blowingly vast, and challenging

Logistically, Villeneuve has managed to weave layers and layers and layers, between ambience, metaphysical, and symbolism it is a masterwork of subtlety

On one hand, not everyone is going to want something to deconstruct

On surface level viewing, I can see Villeneuve's approach as being too much of a slowburn

As a huge fan of both Dune and Villeneuve, my hopes for Part 1 were unrealistically high. They were somehow exceeded so I’ve been counting down the days for Part 2.

One of the more plugged in YT accounts is saying the trailer could arrive as soon as Friday. If not then, it shouldn’t be too far off given the release date is very much in the horizon now.
