Joss Whedon Would Still Consider A Return To The FIREFLY Universe

Before taking on Earth's Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers, there was another ensemble that Joss Whedon brought to the big screen - the cast of cancelled TV show Firefly in 2005's Serenity. Here are his thoughts on returning to the universe.

IndieWire have posted an excerpt from Joss Whedon's chat at SXSW in which he reveals that he still holds onto the hope that he'll get the opportunity to return to the world he created over a decade ago: Firefly.

"I keep thinking they're going to call me, crunch the numbers and say "Hey, we can make money from this!" -- but they don't. I would never rule it out, I love those people. But I can't just wait by the phone."

The series lasted only 14 episodes and was arguably treated very badly by Fox. Many blame the low ratings on the fact that episodes were aired out of the intended order. Luckily for fans of a series (which would go on to achieve cult status) Whedon was given a chance to give the show a proper send off with the big screen continuation in 2005, Serenity. Unfortunately, despite being a hit with critics and fans alike, it failed to make its budget back until it was released on DVD. However, with a large fan base still in existence, do you think it would be a good idea for the director to try and find a way to bring Captain "Mal" Reynolds and his crew back? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

He'd be better off doing the Avengers flicks IMO.

I wouldn't want to pick up with any of the crew, except maybe Jayne. Cap'in is getting fat on his new show.

THIS BIG BUDGET MOVIE WILL OPEN ALL THE DOORS FOR A DIRECTOR THAT DESERVES TO MAKE WHAT HE WANTS AND DO IT THE WAY HE ENVISIONS IT...IT'S LONG OVERDUE.

I'd love to see more Firefly. If Avengers is as amazing as we're hoping, then it'll be a tough call for me because I really loved Firefly. Why not do both though? Nolan did the Prestige after Batman Begins, and Inception after TDK. Surely Whedon can finish a mini series or something between Avengers movies. Marvel has plenty of other franchises to bring to the silver screen during Whedon's time away.

Also, how much do you want to bet that Joss Whedon isn't gonna be asked back for Avengers 2?

I loved Firefly, but was really disappointed in Serenity. I've only watched it once, so maybe I should give it a second chance.

Am I the only person who wants an Angel movie, after the last season it makes you want more. JOSS GIVE US ANGEL, Buffy got her own film and Firefly became Serenity.

I'd give my left nut for a continuation of Firefly in film or TV format. I recall rumors about Netflix...but they never spun into anything more than rumors. :(

How can he direct the Avengers flicks while doing a Firefly tv series at within the same timespan? He'd be worn the hell out doing that.

Seriously?

I mean, even us fans (at least us sane ones) know that that ship has sailed.

Whedon, keep moving forward, never back. Especially after a decade. Please.

Angel at least got a comic book series to keep rolling with, I'd read a firefly book with the right artist on board.

damn, I get excited thinking about a Serenity sequel, and it would make money, but I think it best to leave that gem alone. Let us treasure it as a cult classic and move on.

I would like to see more in the form of a sequel. I was hoping if The Avengers will be mega successful. Then that will give Joss the chance.

The Avengers will be cool but I had an eerie Transformers feeling with the new preview (especially the ending). Time will tell.

I agree that Serenity ended the original saga, doesn't mean the "Firefly Universe" is off limits. Do you think people thought TNG would dominate the original series?

That is a rhetorical questions by the way.

I agree with @MrAnonymous Its time for an Angel movie, that show's last 2 seasons had me on edge with the various threats the team faced... that was some of his best work that was funny, dark, and action packed!

It's firefly, it can't just end, it TOTALLY needs to come back, sucks that wash is gone, and so is shepard, but they could totally pick it back up, the alliance would be obliterated, so every once in a while you have a small alliance runaway ship with devotees of the alliance. Still have the reaver threat, other smugglers. Say another alliance forms at the destruction of the alliance.. It's Joss, he could write some crazy ass stuff.

Oh yeah and it's Nathan Fillion... If Joss wanted to cast him a Mal again, all he'd have to say is, "hey, lose the weight and come back" and fillion would. Have you ever seen the amount of Firefly references on the newer Castle show? Nathan loved firefly

It never ceases to amaze me how many people think that because a show gets cancelled it must have been rubbish. Great shows get cancelled all the time because of stupid timeslots on friday nights when people are going ot instead of staying in to watch TV. They get cancelled because they clash with Monday night football games or Baseball! They get cancelled if they clash with insanely popular Live action Tv shows!

Firefly was simply one of the most original SciFi shows in the last 20 years and it was extremely well conceived and presented with a cast that gelled perfectly. The premise was almost as if Star Wars had the Empire win the final battle in ROTJ and all the heroes died except Han and Chewie and they had to make their way through a galaxy ruled by the Empire smuggling and doing whatever jobs they can do to make a living. That's Firefly, and it was genius! Serinity was an excellent movie to clear up the River Tam tale, but there is plenty more they can do with this concept to make either another film or another TV show.

Firefly did get some comic attention at least. I own them and thought they were quite good.

I want more Firefly.... but if the budget is just not there.. why not do what he did with Buffy and continue the story (or make a new story in the same universe) with a Comic book series.

One of the reasons Firefly is held in such high regard and remembered so fondly is because of its brief lifespan. Someone once said it's best to leave them wanting more... and though Brown Coat I may be, on this subject I'll have to agree.

I'd rather see Joss and do something new that I can geek out about.

Another Serenity quote-

[on the ship's intercom] "This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence...then explode."

Captain Mal Reynolds

Great stuff! If The Avengers is anywhere near as good as Serenity we're in for one hell of a CBM!!
