With Legendary thinking about taking legal action against Warner Bros. following the studio's decision to have Godzilla vs. Kong debut on HBO Max and in theaters at the same time, the crossover could prove to be one of 2021's most controversial releases.
Putting that aside, there's been some negative buzz surrounding the movie for a while now. It's been hit by a few delays, while the lack of any sort of sneak peek has definitely set off some alarm bells. While Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island both did decent, if not massive, numbers at the box office, Godzilla: King of the Monsters proved to be something of a high-profile critical and commercial flop.
Warner Bros. may have taken that into consideration while making Godzilla vs. Kong, because The New York Times is reporting that the budget for the crossover event is around $155 million.
That's by no means a small amount of money, but Godzilla: King of the Monsters cost between $170 million - $200 million, while 2014's Godzilla had a budget of $160 million and Kong: Skull Island set the studio back a whopping $185 million. This makes Adam Wingard's "MonsterVerse" movie the cheapest yet.
Does this mean we should be concerned? Well, it could be a sign that Godzilla vs. Kong isn't quite as epic as hoped, though scaling back the action might not be a bad thing after the last effort.
