GODZILLA VS. KONG Trailer Seemingly Confirms That Mechagodzilla WILL Appear In The Crossover Event

There have been rumblings about Mechagodzilla being in Godzilla vs. Kong for a long time now, but a closer look at last night's trailer appears to confirm that's the case. Find out more after the jump...

Last year, some toy images leaked online which appeared to confirm plans for Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong. Weirdly, the merch showed a fully robotic Godzilla, and one who was seemingly being augmented with technology, and last night's action-packed trailer may have shown at least one of them in action!

As you can see below, we first see what appears to be a robotic Godzilla rampaging through a city right at the start of the trailer. Later, Ren Serizawa (Shun Oguri), the son of Ishirō Serizawa (Ken Watanabe), is shown standing in front of a display which clearly features Mechagodzilla (unless we're being trolled).

So, what exactly is going on here?

Godzilla: King of the Monsters teased plans for Mecha-King Ghidorah, so it's feasible that a robotic Godzilla has also been created, and is terrorising cities across the globe. That could be what leads to Monarch deciding to send Kong after him, only for it to be revealed as the fight continues that this Godzilla is more machine than monster (leading to the real deal returning a little later on).

Kong might also injure Godzilla enough that he needs cybernetic upgrades, though we're fully anticipating the two monsters teaming up to take on Mecha-King Ghidorah whatever happens.

One thing we can safely say is that this franchise is now fully embracing its sci-fi roots...

Got to say, the giant robot godzilla kind of clashes with the tone of the 2014 film and even kind of the crappy sequel. Just seems too goofy after those films darker, more grounded tones.

Really though if Godzilla and Kong are gonna team up against another monster, i would have gone with Destoroyah

Pretty sure its the only monster godzilla didnt defeat himself

@dracula - I’d argue that theoretically, it’s not that much different than starting the MCU with Iron Man, and the eventually going from more grounded to having aliens and gods and sorcerers running around all over the place.

@dracula -

The original Toho films were serious in theme and tone, until eventually the concepts of aliens trying to take over Earth by brainwashing the Kaiju and People with radio emitters while ending up being simian apes when killed became a thing. And that last bit was just a mix of random concepts that did actually show up in a multitude of the Toho films. Even all the way up to Final Wars.

Its not strange at all for Legendary to go this route. However, they themselves haven’t done anything THAT off the wall yet aside from mentioning that Ghidorah was extra terrestrial.

King of the Monsters was fun. Godzilla movies don't need to be Oscar bait. It's okay to have junk food every once in a while.

@InfinitePunches - I'm not disputing that, I love everything from Sidney Lumet, Masaki Kobayashi, Michael Curtiz, F.W. Murnau and Hitchcock to Edgar Wright, the MCU, Abas Kiarostami and Christopher Nolan. I just love movies, no matter how wacky or art house they are as long as they're good. Heck I've been a fan of Godzilla films since my mom used to get me them from Toys R Us on VHS. But King of the Monsters was just a bad movie. My opinion of course.

@dragon316 - Though I had fun with some of these movies when I was a kid, it really doesn't take much to be better than those movies, especially when they got really silly. Toho's King Kong was a sad joke compared to the original RKO version. It was still cool to see them square off, though.

Seemingly confirms...the first means to give an impression of, the latter means to provide truth

Anyone else bored of things being seemingly confirmed?

Could we maybe put the character in question in spoiler tags? Not that I care about spoilers for this particular movie, but, just as a general thing?

@Kyos - Seems entirely too considerate for this particular author.

Read that Godzilla could be being manipulated by the sound wave emitter from the sequel, not to the degree of being able to calm him, but the opposite - leading him to think there’s a constant threat all around him. That’s when Ren Serizawa, comes onboard, he blames Godzilla for his Fathers death, not believing he sacrificed himself.

Also there’s supposed to be another big bad, Kong taking on the dragon creatures, the hand print and him doing the hero landing, is supposed to take place somewhere in the centre of the Earth (the mountains hanging from the sky), where ancient life forms still remain...

So it's essentially Batman V Superman all over again.

Godzilla (Superman) battles Kong (Batman) until they need to put their differences aside to join forces against another bigger threat.

Mothra (Wonder Woman) joins in. It's a "Is she with you" moment except she's actually with Godzilla.

They win. The end.

I can't put my finger on it. I love mecha, I love big things fighting each other, and yet both Pacific Rim jobs and all the Hollywood Zilla and Kong stuff has just left me cold. Crappy stories have been crappy (I think Kong was maybe the "best") but that doesn't account for lack of really memorable action scenes. Too dark? Crappy camera work? Not inventive enough?

Then you have Shin Godzilla, and some of the best scenes of city destruction ever put to film. I can't imagine the movie is that great subtitled but it's fantastic if you speak Japanese. A true and chilling depiction of an unknowable force of nature.

I felt that Mecha-Godzilla was the imposter or Godzilla was being controlled to attack humanity. The trailer revealed a little but it’s still leaves you with a lot of questions. Like at the end of King Of The Monsters the news reports said Godzilla kept the Titans under check from attacking cities. So why would he all of the sudden just start attacking humans? We’re just going to have wait and see.

@bobbo68 -

Godzilla in this verse is known be neutral. He will ensure the planet survives even if it means Kaiju or Human threat.
You get an inkling of this when he is revived by the bomb that Serizawa blasts him with to re-energize him.
When he raises from the ocean and fires off his Atomic Blast, he stares down the humans cause he knew that they almost took him out, and he took that as a hostile action against him.

In this film they are probably going to do two things:
Godzilla is in fact trying to fight Kong because he senses something going on that he is not okay with since some humans are [frick]ing it up for everybody.
Or...the Godzilla we see is in fact Mecha Godzilla fighting Kong this whole time and making Godzilla look bad. Where the real Godzilla is in the latter? No idea. It would have to be properly explained.

@SatsuiNoJXA - Godzilla (the real one) could be hibernating lol.
