Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was the only movie with a watch party last night as Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty revealed some intriguing new facts about his Godzilla sequel!

Godzilla: King of the Monsters upped the action, but earned the wrath of critics when it was released last May. Coming out in the shadow of Avengers: Endgame did the sequel now favors, but it did set the stage for an epic clash of the Titans in the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong movie. 

Talking of Titans, many hardcore monster fans have questioned why the big beasties in Legendary's MonsterVerse are known as "Titans" rather than the traditional "Kaiju" term. It's a minor, yet still very significant difference, to some, and a decision which some feel is a major mistake.

Tweeting from the official Godzilla: King of the Monsters account during a watch party last night, filmmaker Michael Dougherty shared a lengthy explanation for the change. As he acknowledges, it sounds cool, but Kaiju fans are unlikely to be overly convinced by his take.

One of the most enjoyable movies of 2019 for me. You could tell Dougherty was a fan of the franchise. And unlike Star Wars, this movie doesn't try to shit on the original movies.

@TheJustinHammer - to be fair most Godzilla movies feel like an excuse for monsters to fight. Just put in some humans to get non-kaiju fans.

Eh, I'd argue the use of the word "titan" has been diluted into not really bringing to mind the ancient Greek gods that ruled over the Golden Age of Humanity, randos are more likely to think of a dumb sports team with that name. With kaiju anyone familiar with the property will immediately think of big, strong, scary looking monster.

The mythology places them as being the gods before the pantheon they actually worshipped. Nobody really worshipped them, as far as I know, but it's how their myths stablish them. They ruled, then Zeus with his siblings, cousins and 2 defectors sent them to Tartarus and took over ruling over the world from them.
You're right, it's an unfair generalization, but I'm going by what my friends that aren't into and have never even dipped their toes into this type of thing think, & to be fair they were lost at hearing the word "kaiju". There's a whole wikipedia page of teams named that, but they likely take it from "Remember the Titans". Meeting them has opened my eyes into how many things we take for common knowledge when it isn't, same way they really can't believe I don't know the lyrics to "Tusa".

@TheJustinHammer -You're right, I'm out of my depth as I've just read a bit here and there about mythology. Couple of questions: Why am I wrong in thinking that the parents of gods are gods too? Are only Olympians considered gods and why?

What I said about the titan term was complete BS & I apologize. It's the other way around; we, as nerds, understand "kaiju" while "titan" is a much more mainstream term. All that hair I had grown out must have been messing with my brain.

For the general audience Kaiju doesn't mean much. Titan means big, huge, colossal, for people who know Greek mythology, which as far as ancient mythologies of the world I think the Greek myths are the more well known, it means some of the first beings, fathers and mothers of the gods. Not really a surprise.

I haven't even seen this movie, but I was a big Godzilla fan as a kid (the Japanese movies). Is this one worth my time?
