THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Confirms He's Playing Morpheus In The Movie

The first trailer for The Matrix Resurrections certainly left us with a lot to talk about, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has now taken to social media to confirm the long-standing theory he's playing Morpheus.

Since the moment he was cast in 2019, there has been speculation that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II might be playing a younger version of Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections

Now, the actor has confirmed that he is indeed playing a new version of Neo's mentor, something we all assumed was probably the case following yesterday's trailer. While there's no denying that the talented actor will almost certainly deliver a badass take on Morpheus, there's bound to be some disappointment that Laurence Fishburne won't be reprising the role here.

The Man of Steel actor has previously claimed that he was never even asked to return for this movie, and it's unclear how The Matrix Resurrections will explain his change in appearance (especially when Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss' Neo and Trinity have aged in real-time since the previous films).

At the moment, it's sounding a lot like this fourth instalment will actually serve as a direct sequel to the first movie; those sequels weren't great, but to ignore them would wipe away a lot of mythology.

The response to yesterday's trailer was positive, but it seems all too easy to forget how bad those previous two efforts were - not to mention the fact that Lana Wachowski hasn't really made a good movie since 1999.

Regardless, The Matrix Resurrections arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22.

It was rumored that’s who he’d be playing when he was cast. I couldn’t really see it at first since him and Fishburne don’t really look alike. But seeing him with the shaved head and the wardrobe, now I can totally see it.

I think the new Matrix actually looks amazing but I really dislike how Yahya is showing up in everything at the moment. I think he’s massively overrated, I haven’t liked him in anything I’ve seen him in. His acting was just plain bad in Aquaman, and although his acting was fine to good in everything else, I still find him kind of dull and unlikeable. His turn as Dr Manhattan. His candyman. Hell I can’t even remember his Black Mirror character, just that he was in it. I feel like a grump but it’s frustrating when big parts keep going to an actor and you just don’t GET it.

@connorblaze - Hm, fair enough, but i think he was dope as Dr Manhattan after the reveal and was the right amount of camp for Manta. Not seen Candyman yet, but i think he deserves the exposure.

It would be nice if they got Fishburne to do a voice over or something if he didn't shoot any scenes, but he's also no spring chicken, as the role looks to be quite physical, which Yaya suits just fine.

Also if the leaks are true **SPOILERS**

Yaya is a bootleg programme of Morpheus, having no physical body. The real one died of old age, and that's why Niobi is going to be aged up. Apparantly it's like 60 years since Revolutions.

He’ll be Morpheus’s son I’ll wager and it doesn’t sound like it’s a direct sequel to the original first film…

From the trailer you can see trinity in a pod, the machine must have gotten her body and resurrected her and put her inside the matrix and there’s a scene where they have Neos body with his burnt out eyes… this will be set after the sequels and in their future…

@SuperSomething616 - i doubt it, as then wouldn't he have been born naturally (without ports?) unless bad story telling manifest him to have been in the pods during the first 3 movies.

@SuperSomething616 - Wrong on both accounts…This is a direct sequel to all the movies in last trilogy…And this is Morpheus in name only really…The whole thing is extremely convoluted and somewhat lazy in my view but who am I…Soft reboot I guess is what you’d call it…Think Star Wars the Force Awakens…
