Power Rangers was released last year with much fan fare, and broke out for a pretty decent opening weekend. However, the film was panned by critics (45% on Rotten Tomatoes) and even with the opening weekend, the film quickly fell flat finishing with a little over 42 million dollars over the 100 million dollar production budget.

The film teased audiences with what could be coming during a mid-credits scene that foreshadowed the arrival of the Green Ranger, Tommy Oliver. However, with the mediocre BO and reviews, a sequel seemed pretty unlikely. The only glimmer of hope came in the form of home sales which were nothing spectacular, but pretty decent at just over 11 million dollars.

Hasbro recently acquired the Power Rangers brand from Saban Entertainment for a whopping 522 million dollars, and has laid out plans for a very diverse and robust line of products. One of those products would seem to indicate a follow up the 2017 feature film where it is said Hasbro is meeting with studios to try to get the project off the ground. The last film was released by Lionsgate.

CBM reached out to Hasbro for comment regarding the potential sequel to the movie and we received the following statement from Julie Duffy, SVP of Global Communications:

We see tremendous potential for the Power Rangers franchise around our entire brand blueprint, including feature films. We have nothing specific to announce at this time, but please stay tuned for future news and updates around the Power Rangers brand.

Hasbro is in the process of phasing out the old Power Rangers product lines to make way for theirs, Based on projections from the company, the earliest we can expect to see new Power Rangers merchandise is 2019. However, it could take longer for any new information to develop on a sequel to the 2017 film.

Good to hear. There is a lot of potential in the brand and I’m hoping it’s finally realized

I liked the movie but they should have scaled back on the designs of the suits and megazords. Something a little more sleek and simple would go a long way.

I quite enjoyed it and actually want to see more. Not only from power rangers, but also other hasbro brands. And maybe even a voltron movie

There is something Hasbro has planned for Power Rangers, and whether or not it follows the first film remains to be seen but the plan is to very much MOLD Power Rangers, into a new entity.

Meaning, when the second film hits and when the credits roll, Power Rangers is planning to move away from Saban and have a plan to start fresh. They don't want to ruin it, but they want to "evolve" the brand.

In all honesty, I really enjoyed the Power Rangers film. Sure it wasn't perfect, but I felt this was a good jumping off point for the franchise. It was fun, colorful, and had just enough of a more serious tone and touch of nostalgia to make it work.

I would love to see this cast return for more stories. Though a tweaking of the suits and megazords couldn't hurt.

@CaptainAmazing - I thought it was fantastic, honestly. It was something that felt fresh even though it was a property that everyone's heard of and seen before. It was nice to follow a team of teens who I could actually root for. I love the actors they picked accross the board for both the heroes and villains. If they put the amount of labor and care into their future films that they did the first before the could find their footing, their next adventures may very well eclipse the last one at the Box Office.

Go, go, power rangers!

The last movie wasn't exactly horrible.
I liked how they retold each characters' story and who they are.
The Words needed a lot of work but the whole concept of Rita being a Green Ranger and Zordon the Red was a very nice touch.
I really want to see where they could take it with a direct sequel.

I liked the film but the villains were poor. Goldars design was terrible and Rita should of been played by someone else .

They should do a hard core tv show on Netflix. Another movie would probably tank like the last one.
