Star Trek Into Darkness just hasn't performed as well as Paramount or anyone else was expecting at the North American box office. The J.J. Abrams helmed sequel is light years away from being considered a flop, but it won't end up coming anywhere near the predicted $80 million weekend and 4 1/2-day total of $100 million. Instead, an increase of 30% on Saturday means it took an additional $27.2 million after Friday's disappointing $22 million, while analysts now predict a Sunday gross of $21.2 million. That equals around a $70.5 million weekend and an $84.1 million domestic cume. Unfortunately, not even the higher priced 3D and IMAX tickets were enough for Star Trek Into Darkness to beat Star Trek's opening back in 2009. Internationally, it took $80.5 million overseas for a global total of $164.5 million. In slightly more positive news, Iron Man 3 was a solid #2 this weekend with $35.1 million. That takes its domestic cume to $337.1 million and the Marvel Studios threequel earned $736.2 million internationally (after scoring another $40.2 million this weekend). With a worldwide cume of $1.073B, Iron Man 3 is now the #9 highest grossing movie of all time.

Star Trek is going to suffer next week in the US due to the juggernaught fast and furious 6 and The hangover coming out. Will be knocked down to 3 or 4.

General audiences aren't tired of Star trek it's just that Iron Man 3 just came out like 2 weeks ago so it's still making money

Paramount can probably thank Abrams' asinine "Mystery Box" idea for costing them around $100m all-told on STID when the film finally finishes its run. By trying to play coy with Kahn, even though absolutely everyone who followed the film saw it coming, the studio was unable to sell the film to more casual moviegoers by using the famous villain's name.

In any event, its going to hurt the franchise, as there is no way this one has as much staying power at the theaters as the last... There is way more competition this year. (Abrams first Star Trek had to deal with "Terminator Salvation" as its main competition in the following weeks,). Paramount is spending "Avengers" levels of money on this franchise now, and they're making less than "Tron: Legacy" money back. I also noticed that a quick walk through the toy department at Walmart revealed zero Star Trek tie-in toys. I have to wonder how much profit they're actually seeing on the franchise these days.

Iron man 3 made 35.1 m usd that is more than a 50% flop from previous weekend (72.5 m usd), so I guess marvel/Disney have taught us something: how to sell a shitty movie in just 3 weekends all over the world, now I am worried about star wars :(

@DoubleD I agrees with Soto y do not even know how box office works, and u are already saying IM3 has (technically) done better than TDK? Dude IM3 has gone Down more than 50% 2 weekends in a row, just to give u an idea TDK just went 50 something% Down after openning then it kept stable 4 a while, IM3 is not getting that for sure (according 2 its numbers) and BO overseas , well nobody here seems to Understand how it works any ways :S

lol@People being sad. Trek was a great film. Don't let a lack of monumental turnout depress you because the film deserves a billion more than Iron Man does. If you enjoyed it, you win. There's a large market already established for films like Fast and Furious, GIJOE, Resident Evil, Transformers and Iron Man 3. Hell, I had a cousin ask me about Iron Man 3 and I remember her going on about how she doesn't like these Lord of the Rings and stupid super hero movies. But when it seems like the big thing everyone is into, it becomes important to them. Then, forgotten.

Enjoy what you like. Stop trippin.
