Malcolm McDowell Received Death Threats from Angry Trekkies

Set your phasers on crazy. I understand Captain Kirk is a beloved fictional character, but this is downright scary. Star Trek fans are some of the most loyal and knowledgeable fans in the fandom community, but for a few, their love and loyalty transformed into an ugly hate.

In the movie Star Trek: Generations the actor, Macolm McDowell played the villain Dr. Soran. His evil plot is undone by the epic pairing of Captain Picard and Kirk. They team up to battle the lunatic on Veridian III. During the confrontation Kirk falls from a metal catwalk, suffering fatal injuries. Not the most heroic death for such a legendary character, and that is probably the seed of the hatred from the fans who expected something more grandiose.

Q. Is it true you received death threats from “Star Trek” fans after your character, megalomaniac Dr. Tolian Soran, killed Captain Kirk in “Star Trek: Generations”?
A. “Oh, dear old Captain Kirk! It was the early days of the Internet. Yes, it's true. But I've made my peace with the trekkies. I've been to a trekkie convention. I told them, ‘Go on, if you want to rip me apart! Go ahead!' We had jeers and cheers and had some fun with it.

“Hey, it freed (William) Shatner up to do ‘Boston Legal.' But I think he was miffed when the reboot came out (2009's ‘Star Trek'). They asked Leonard Nimoy to be in it, but not Bill. I think he was a little upset by that. That's what I heard.”

Bonus Information!

Q. Is it true that Kubrick severed all ties with you the moment that you finished
“A Clockwork Orange”?
A. “Yes! That was his M.O. I was too young to understand. I thought it was just rejection. Which it was, but it wasn't personal.

“I was very, very upset. I felt I had been used. He'd gotten everything he wanted out of me and now I couldn't get a return of a phone call.

“After working so closely with Stanley and going through hell and high water to get this incredible film and that performance which is practically in every frame of the film — then, being cut off and hearing nothing? Very bizarre.”

Don´t pretend to be jocks, as you are also the type of folk who used to threat Joel T. Schumacher for creating the bat-nipples, and Ron Marz for killing of Hal Jordan and etc.

Man, I love Kubrick's films, but he really was an asshole.

I guess he got his comeuppance via Eyes Wide Shut being his last movie.

The man truly needs to be in a fresh CMB. I don't want it to be the case where I only here from him when he wants to talk about the good old days. He could be terrific in so many new CBM franchises.

Wait, really? He is hated for playing a villain that kills a character that is played by another actor? Now that is a trip.

But this is some old news that McDowell is talking about. No big.

Hell it wasn't his fault he was just playing the part. But I did love his DEATH Quote.

Dr. Soran: Death It's like a predator; it's stalking you. Oh,you can try and outrun it with doctors, medicines, new technologies but in the end, time is going to hunt you down... and make the kill.

Picard: It's our mortality that defines us, Soran. It's the truth of our existence.

Kubrick is one of the most overrated directors ever. I can't think of one of his films I enjoyed from beginning to end. Maybe Dr. Strangelove.

I'm not a fan of Stark Trek...I don't get it, what's the big deal about Star Trek? Star Wars (original) is TEN times better!? also, anyone who sends death threats over their geeky obsessions is a [frick]ing loser and is resentful for the fact they have spent their whole life talking to fellow losers who dress like Spock and have never been laid in their life. They;re scum.

I sometimes question if people on this forum/website would act like these trekkies. I mean every remembers comic-con two years ago when someone was stabbed over a book.
Sometimes the lines between fans, nerds, and obsession are way too blurred.

He WAS Star Trek. In some ways, moreso than Shatner.
