Neill Blomkamp Uninterested In Directing A STAR TREK Movie As Well

District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp expressed his hesitant in tackling a Star Wars film in the past, and now he reveals why he wouldn't want to helm a Star Trek movie (or any franchise film) despite being a fan of the franchise.

After directing two Star Trek films for Paramount, J.J. Abrams will be heading to a galaxy far, far away with his next film, Star Wars: Episode VII. With Paramount reportedly wanting to release a third Trek installment in 2016 in time for the franchise's 50th anniversary, Abrams will likely be too busy working on Star Wars (which is targeting a 2015 debut) to return. One director who is commonly suggested for big sci-fi movies is Neill Blomkamp, who previously helmed 2009's District 9 and the upcoming Elysium. But in an interview with Filmz, he rules himself out of the running for not only Star Trek 3 (or 13, depending on how you're counting), but any film in the franchise (despite considering himself a Trekkie). He also explains why he isn't very interested in franchise films period.

"Dude, I used to be a 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' fan. Like, big time... But no, I probably wouldn't do that. I don't know if me getting involved with a franchise is the best thing for me. When studios smell franchises, they smell money. And they'll try to do what they can to the franchise to make it make the most money it can make, and a lot of those interesting ideas kind of fall by the side of the road. So... Do I like 'Star Trek' on its own without the politics of making it? Yes, absolutely. But do I think that you could make it in the way that I would want to make it? Probably not, which makes me not want to make it." Blomkamp also said in the past that he probably won't direct a Star Wars movie either, despite being a fan of the franchise. Who do you think should direct the next Star Trek film? Blomkamp's next film, Elysium, hits theaters August 9th.

Thank you, Mr. Blomkamp, thank you. Keep your original outings coming.

He's right but I think Abrams Star Trek is pretty original in their own right, and part two was even more out there than the first.

Still, I bet the studio was putting a lot of pressure on Abrams to do this and that to make it more profitable.

This is EXACTLY why he would be great as a director of a franchise film. Just like a certain Christopher Nolan who did not approach making a Batman film by loading it with tuns of colorful characters and props that can be turned into toys, he approached his movies in a serious fashion and BINGO, Batman has never been more successful.

I have always dreamed of Blomkamp making Green Lantern or taking over the Justice League reigns if Nolan did not continue. But if it means compromising his vision then forget it.

Ya I respect this guy so much, I mean damn he's like super young and super successful and creative in Hollywood which is really rare. I respect that, although I do think he should direct something like a CBM or a video game movie he should Keep up the good work in making original movies. Isn't Elysium his second film?

If he could direct any CBM I would get him for iron man but have Kevin fiege out of the picture because what he stated above is exactly the kind of business marvel studios likes to run

I prefer this guy keeps making his original films. Seems like he was burnt by his experience trying to make Halo.

so does this mean we wont be getting a sequel to district 9? cuz i really like that movie
and i feel bad for the guy who was turning into a alien
the alien said he wud be back in 3 years...they shud make a sequel 3 years later of the guy/alien hiding still on the run...leaving notes to his wife he is still out there somewhere...waiting to come back to her once he is cured..
the aliens come back but the ppl think its a invasion or something...idk
im just talking
but i think a sequel to that movie shud be made...i think that movie is underrated!!!

so no big movies for this guy...i wud love to see him make a mass effect movie....would love to see him do a DC movie...or marvel wudnt matter...guys like him...and the director of black swan shud make CBM in the future

@theduderises he'll make more money out of making original films than working for those guys, and even if he did work for them the movie would probably suck cause they would suck out all of the creativity

I think he'll be perfect for Green Lantern!

That character requires MOST creative mind in writing & directing!
So he'll be great!

Of Superman/Batman film!

I won't handle him Justice League!
Cuz that's a hell of a lot of characters to deal in one film!

But Green Lantern or Worlds Finest!

& if doesn't want to do it!
Well, dude if District 9 had bombed or was far far less successful at BoxOffice, then you'll be making a studio franchise film now like Nolan!
Momento & Insomnia were successful but they weren't blockbusters (But then i guess those film can't be blockbusters, they were indie & noir)!
Anyway, so he made BATMAN films, as he desired cuz if his friendship with Jeff Robinov, now he can make INCEPTION & Interstellar! & god know how many big intelligent blockbusters!
If he hadn't made BATMAN or it wasn't that successful, who would give him 200 million$ for film like Inception, that even studio execs aren't sure of its sucess!

So if your film failed; you have no backup!
If (unfortunately & hopefully Not!) ELYSIUM failed, it's not a studio movie, so who's gona give you 150 million$ again to make an Intellectual Blockbuster!
So make a few SuperHero films for your own sake!
Cuz I know you're incredibley telented & an amazing filmmaker!
& so just like Nolan, I want u to carry on making Big films that are smart & massive!
& not just 10 million$ smart movie that will never be massively successful, there are tons of people who can make those; & just a few who can make Inception & Elysium!

Come on, take over GREEN LANGERN!

He's exactly right. Paramount clearly doesn't give a rip about quality or intelligence in the ST films... that's extremely obvious from the two script nightmares we got from JJ & Co...

Well said Neill Blomkamp, he basically stated that what they're making isn't anything to do with Star Trek and just action film crap for the masses. He being a real fan of TNG means he understands Gene Roddenberrys principles of Star Trek and Star Fleet. They are the United Nations, not the Bloody USA. Their stories are about politics, ethics and discovery, not space battle, war and fist fights.

Stick to your own movies mate, let Hollywood continue making dumb movies for dumb audiences who want to see the same film over and over again with a number attached to the end of its name.

I loved District 9. This guy has skill and judging by his words, he's not a sell out. Whether or not hollywood likes his thinking, I respect him as an artist and a film maker. I can't wait to see where his career goes.
