The main premise of the movie is flawed in that the Romulan antagonist Nero’s sole mission is to punish Ambassador Spock & ultimately destroy the entire Federation of Planets, due to Spock’s ‘failure’:

• In stopping the Romulan sun from going supernova
• Which ultimately destroys the planet Romulus
• And Nero’s wife being killed by the above mentioned proceedings

According to the storyline due to these events Nero and crew are accidentally sent back into the past approx. 129 years.

Rather than warn his people what was going to transpire in the upcoming century and a quarter thus potentially saving them + giving them a tremendous tactical advantage with 24th century technology in the 23rd century.

(If Nero’s 24th century ‘mining ship’ could wreck such havoc on 23rd century star ships the Romulans probably would rule the galaxy in the subsequent alternate universe created.)

However rather than do any of that … Captain Nero would prefer to stew for 25 years waiting for Ambassador Spock to also finally arrive in the past so his nefarious plot could come to fruition.

Not plausible… Really if Nero could undo just about everything especially saving his wife and ultimately his planet why wouldn’t he?

Also although I’m not an astrophysicist; one would think that if any sun went supernova (regardless of the damage caused potentially or otherwise) by the 24th century, technology not only would/could have detected such a star’s degradation (stellar evolution) but more than likely the window to act or react wouldn’t be so minute.

THE INCREDIBLE DELTA VEGA COINCIDENCE(S)…

These were unbelievable … Literally.

Captain Spock jettisons First Officer Kirk to the ice world Delta Vega due to gross insubordination. After crash landing & regaining consciousness Kirk decides against the computer’s recommendation and leaves the comfort and safety of his space pod.

He then hoofs it to the nearest Federation outpost 14 Km away (approx 8.7 miles away) where in route he ‘runs’ into two extra-terrestrial monsters.

The alpha monster quickly dispatches the smaller one and then decides to come after Kirk. A quick chase ensues including Kirk falling over an ice cliff with the clumsy alpha monster falling behind him… Getting to his feet the lucky First Officer notices an ice cave with the enraged monster in close pursuit. Briefly it appears that Kirk has outsmarted the beast as he continued to run deeper into the cave; but how quickly events change in fact NOW all is seemingly lost as the monster ejects its elongated tongues which trap Kirk’s leg drawing our protagonist ever closer to the creature’s waiting mandibles. All is truly lost; but wait!!!! Spock Prime is ALREADY inside the cave with a flaming torch which fortuitously scares the cowardly monster away! OK even if Spock Prime was outside the cave and simply saw Kirk run inside and thus followed him…

Well, I’m also not a mathematician but what are the FREAKIN’ odds that anything so remote could EVER happen!?!??! Not only have both men been marooned on the SAME planet, both men are in such proximity to each other (on that same planet) that Spock Prime could rescue Kirk!?!?

“…Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world…” – Apparently in “ALL” the galaxy…!!!

But hold up; the paradoxically challenged plot continues as a few minutes later the young engineering genius Montgomery Scott is introduced & joins this disjointed three way Star Trek convention/reunion. Apparently ole Delta Vega is somewhat of a nexus in the Star Trek continuity…

Come on folks this direction in plot development was/is utterly ridiculous. There’s not that much coincidence even in a copy machine… Let alone the alpha quadrant.

MORE MISTAKES (I mean) NONSENSE

‘A hands swollen to the size of semi deflated balloons’ Kirk wakes up from a sedative induced coma eventually becoming ‘numb tongued’ (due to Dr. McCoy continued use of him as a human chemistry set) and realizes that the Enterprise is heading into a Romulan trap…

Captain Pike my man this one is on you… Kirk explained that he drew his/this conclusion primarily based from your OWN dissertation(s)…

Come on man you’re a Star Fleet captain.

It’s a good thing that Kirk’s heart rate didn’t get too elevated in rushing to convince YOU OF YOUR OWN INFORMATION or I shutter to think what would have happened to ship & crew had you entered Vulcan space without your shields raised.

Wow…

In fact Captain Pike’s faux pas must have made him feel guilty as sin since he then PROMOTED the academically suspended, ‘tricked his way aboard the Enterprise’ Cadet Kirk to SECOND in command of the FLAGSHIP of the Federation!?!?!?

REALLY!!?!?!

Although an INCREDIBLE set of events, again not very likely…

Actually from a casting perspective the movie was OK…

I just think the writers took indolent shortcuts translating into poor transitions and because of that although it was entertaining (due largely in part of the nostalgia of it all + the excellent special effects from ILM) the movie was not nearly as good as it should have been for those of us truly familiar with the franchise.

alright... i dug this movie.... and i really respect the stuff you found wrong with it... the "unlikely" stuff you mention is interesting but doesn't ruin the experience for me... my thing is: why didn't the black hole created at the end of the film (the one created by ALL OF THE RED MATTER) not create a more lethal black hole than the one that destroyed Vulcan. It seems to me that comparatively, the latter black hole would suck up at least the earth since they were right next to it and all.... but yeah still a fun flick

I loved this movie but I understand what you are trying to say here. However I feel there are some flaws in your argument.

First Nero. You state that going to Romulus and warning them about the supernova would be the rational thing to do. But the point is that Nero is not rational. He is motivated by the grief and pain from seeing his planet destroyed. He is driven by hate, not logic. Also he has been thrown 129 years into the past. His wife would not be born yet and he’d be dead or ancient by the time she is. He cannot return to the home he loved.

Captain Pike’s trust in Kirk is due to respect for his father. He also believes that his rebellious attitude is a positive thing. Remember he tells Kirk that he’s “the kind of person Starfleet is missing”.

I except that the some of the Delta Vega coincidences are a bit farfetched. It makes sense that they would both be on Delta Vega but bumping into each other is unlikely. But remember this is a film and some creative licence is acceptable.

In response to Kingradon’s statement about the Red Matter, remember they had travelling away from Earth at warp for a few minutes. Since it only took seven minutes to get to all the way to Vulcan I assume this would be long enough to get clear of Earth.

I want you to remember something and this is for all trekkies, jj has now made star trek cool, i watched it at imax and it was increadible.

In films there are always plot holes but to pick at everything is so trekkie. I loved DS9, i even loved star trek enterprise, but the franchise despreatly needad this.

And as for plot holes if you read the prequel to the film (availble for iphone as a app) it does explain alot.

have you SEEN "across the universe"? that movie was absolute sh*t to begin with, but wood brought it to an entirely new low.HP0-S24 on a scale of 1 to 10,HP0-S21 i give her a negative 32. and nearly incalcuable lack of acting ability aside, she is simply not at all attractive. i realize i'm one of the few people who does like dunst as mj, even as braindump a true spidey comics fan,HP0-S20 but that doesn't factor into my distaste for evan rachel wood.
