STAR TREK 3 Is Reportedly On The Hunt For 3 Female Characters... And Bryan Cranston

Many people were notably disappointed with the depiction of the two major female characters in 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness. A new rumor has recently surfaced that claims the sequel is looking to rectify that, with the creation of 3 key female roles. Read on for more!

A recent report has surfaced, regarding the as-of-yet-untitled sequel to Star Trek Into Darkness. The movie, set to be directed by Justin Lin (Fast Five), has had its fair share of issues behind the scenes. However, it appears production is back on track with the announcement that star Simon Pegg will help co-write the script. Now, Film Divider (via WhatCulture) claim to have come across some key information about the movie, and some potential new characters joining the franchise.

In their article, they claim to have learnt the identity of three key female roles - namely Bones' ex-wife, the captain of a Federation ship, and the President of the United Federation of Planets. If this news is to be believed, it shows a noticeable attempt to build on some of the criticsm received by Into Darkness - particularly with regards to the treatment of Dr. Carol Marcus (see above).

The report went on to claim that the filmmakers are also looking into casting the villain, who is "supposed to be Bryan Cranston-like". They even suggested that Cranston has himself briefly spoken with the studio about the part. For now, this information should all be taken with a huge pinch of salt. However, if it's found to be true, this could be a very exciting time for the franchise.

What do you guys think? Would you be excited to see Walter White take on Captain Kirk? And what about the increased involvement of women in this movie? Let us know in the comments below!

Star Trek 3 is set to be released July 8, 2016 - just in time for the series' 50-year anniversary.

Thumbed! Great find as usual, Minty!

This actually sounds...great? Amazing how much progress can be reached when a hack like Roberto Orci gets kicked off the project!

The complete uselessness of Alice Eve's character and the dumbing down of Zoe Saldana's character were definitely two MAJOR problems with Into Darkness (among all its other ones) so it's really nice to see them taking steps to fix that.

And Bryan Cranston as the villain? MAKE IT SO.

Of course I kid. But Cranston as the villain would kill it. I just finished Breaking Bad (I know, I'm behind) but that was the best. Show. Ever.

@EzioKenway1225 Yeah I hear you. This is a great step in the right direction...but you're tight, it's no guarantee this movie will actually be any good. Heck, even with some of my problems with JJ Abrams, I'd rather he come back and direct this (impossible, I know) rather than this Fast and Furious guy.

The fact that they were left scrambling to meet their schedule after Orci left doesn't really inspire confidence. We'll see!

I know, it's fool proof. You could work in a plot where Bones hit rock bottom and had a relationship (that wasn't sexual) with a 15 year-old. Then, when she turned 17 they got married (cause in this universe the marriage laws are really [frick]ed up). And then he divorced her on the same day he left to go be on the Enterprise.

Woman actor works her ass off to look good naked=>Object.

@EzioKenway1225 Agreed, after seeing what he did with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, he definitely seemed like the best choice. If they wanted to make the Trek movies smarter, more character-driven, and with heaps of social commentary (which is kind of what Trek was all about)...Wyatt was probably their guy.

If they just wanted to make this another action-heavy movie that just so happens to be in space...well, they got the right guy for that too, I guess.

@Pasto - Cobie as a Federation captain/Bones' ex-wife? Hell yes! I'm sure The Foot would do a good job as the President too :P

Cheers @SauronsBANE - not gonna lie this story is a bit tenuous, but it'd be great news if it were true!

The difference is that most male actors actually have an important part to play in their movies. When there's a scene of them shirtless or whatever, it's not a big deal because they clearly aren't just there to give women lady-boners.

Alice Eve, on the other hand, had practically nothing to do in the entire movie. The scene where she does strip down is so ridiculously forced and unnecessary, that it's hard to believe that she's there for any other reason than to give the dudes a boner. It's demeaning.

"because they clearly aren't just there to give women lady-boners."

LOL!
The superhero shirtless abs scenes are basically only for the women.
Women are half the population.
Studios know that women [frick]ing LOVE those moments.
Hell, they must know already and say:"Let's go see a superhero movie. That guy got ripped!"
You know stuff like that...
If you don't believe me ask a woman.

Shirtless ripped handsome actor=More $$$$$$$$$$$$ cause of word of mouth

But i haven't seen Trek 2, so i don't know about that scene.
So you must be right.

I hope i see Gadot naked in WW.
