Rogue One: A Star Wars Story earned $65 million over the four holiday weekend, something which ensured that it remained at #1 for a third week in a row. As a result, the movie's domestic total has been brought up to a mighty $440 million. However, that means it's now passed Captain America: Civil War's $408.1 million to become the third highest grossing release in North America in 2016.
Next up for Rogue One is Finding Dory, and it should have no trouble sailing past the Pixar movie's $486.3 million. It should achieve that within the next week or so, but there are no losers here. After all, Disney released all of these, so as long as they're all making money, they don't care which is #1!
There's no denying that this is an amazing start for the first of Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars Anthology movies, though. Had Rogue One flopped or underperformed, that could very well have been the end of these spinoffs, but you'd best believe the studios are feeling more confident than ever before about moving forward with more of them following Han Solo next year. Hopefully one of them involves Obi-Wan Kenobi, eh? As always, let us know your thoughts on this news in the usual place.
