BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE Beats Competition In Mid-Night Screenings

George Lucas has been met with criticism to re-release his Star Wars tales in 3D, but that didn't prevent people from going to see the first installment, Episode I. Click here to see the numbers.

Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace ruled the mid-night screenings today beating out the likes of Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum in The Vow and Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in Safe House. The re-release of George Lucas' prequel in 3D took in 1.1 million dollars during its mid-night showing with The Vow coming is second at 770K and Safe House bringing in 550K.

Star Wars has used a number of marketing tools in order to promote the re-release of Episode One including specialty 3D glasses that look like Anakin's pod racer goggles and also have Darth Mauls' likeness on them. They also have been giving away toys at the screenings as well. It looks as if it has paid off for Lucas and company with them coming away the winner at the mid-night showings. We will have to wait an see if the strategy pays off in the long run, but it is expect that the film will gross in the 20 million dollar range.

With a number of other box office hits still in theaters and The Rocks Journey 2: The Mysterious Island not participating in mid-night showings the numbers for Star Wars is still up in the air. Make sure to check back here at CBM for the latest.

Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace stars Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd, Ian McDiarmid, Pernilla August, Oliver Ford Davies, Hugh Quarshie, Ahmed Best, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Frank Oz, Terence Stamp, Brian Blessed, Andrew Secombe, Ray Park, and will be re released in 3D TODAY.

@ CaptainProg

Yeah, each year after this will feature a different episode in 3D

2013 = ATOC 3D
2014 = ROTS 3D
2015 = ANH 3D ...ect

I honestly doubt anyone but Lucas will be receiving any money from these releases

Went & saw SW last night was good...Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars, but the WRATH OF THE TITANS trailer was in 3D & I enjoyed its 3D more than Star Wars!!

The funniest thing about this news is that there is not ONE new thing in this movie.

It's the same exact movie.

It's like owning an apple tree loaded with apples, but the grocery store advertises their apples are ALREADY picked-!, so you go buy them.

So stupid.

@headlopper the new thing is that it is in 3-D. A true Star Wars fan would go see it in the theater simply because of that fact alone.

Your analogy does not compute. You do not have Star Wars 3D at home, or a screen about 40 feet wide.

So Special.

Seriously, I just don't understand WHO exactly it is that went (and is going) to see this. My nephew was 7 when I took him to see it when it was first out, and he was bored. He actually whispered to me, during what was supposedly the big, exciting climax of the film, "Can we leave?" That's how bored he was.

And I know a couple of die-hard Star Wars fans around my age who also despised the first film.

So if little kids didn't like it and big kids didn't like it...who the !%#!# is seeing this movie!?

I saw Star Wars 3D. I think its funny so many people are saying its stupid to see it. Some people enjoy it on the big screen best. Some people are curious about the 3D, (which the post conversion is well done) Some people are complaining why go when there is nothing new? But when he puts new stuff in everyone bitches, I swear some of you people just love to hate stuff.
If you dont like it DONT GO. But why bitch about it?

@kriswone- You're right. 3-D is added , but no new content. That's my point.We've got the video's home, seen them in the theaters when they were originally released , and some have even bought the recent re-worked versions, so there's absolutely NOTHING new other than 3-D, which I dislike.

Read my recent editorial on 3-D to understand why:

The 3D is like a pop-up book, flat elements separated and that's all. No depth to the elements what so ever! People paying to see that and being impressed literally are easily pleased with more money than sense!

I have to laugh @the haters hating on the hater hate. The absolute die-hards and the parents of the new Star Wars generation (4-6 yr olds) went and saw it. The box office will drop next weekend (unless the die-harders pay yet again.
