Did Colin Trevorrow Confirm His Involvement With STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Back In June?

While Star Wars isn't specifically mentioned, Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow revealed in an interview which has only just now surfaced that his next project will "create a good deal of ire" against him and that he loves the "mythology" as much as fans. Read on for details!

Film Stage has discovered the following interview with director Colin Trevorrow (conducted back in June) in which he describes his next project after Safety Not Guaranteed...and it sounds an awful lot like Star Wars: Episode VII! While nothing is specifically mentioned by name, the talk of drawing ire from fans and respecting mythology certainly sounds as he will be taking on a BIG franchise or well-known adaptation of some sort. However, it's worth noting that he doesn't confirm that he will helm the highly anticipated 2015 movie and instead describes it as an opportunity. This does at least confirm earlier reports about him being in the running to direct (if he is indeed discussing Star Wars). When he was recently asked about his possible involvement with the franchise, Trevorrow remained coy, so now only time will tell - an official announcement can't be too far away!

"I can’t speak with any specificity as to what the next thing will be. There are amazing opportunities that have arisen as a result of this. One of them, I will say, will probably create a good deal of ire against me on the Internet when people find out what it is. So, I just want to say in advance that I promise you, for all those who love the mythology that I will be tackling, trust that I love it as much as you do. And I will respect it, and hopefully make it not suck."

Called it. I would bet money he's the one whose directing it. *cue fanboys going into a panic because he isn't one of their fan choices*

I think it will be a new director or someone who has done a limited amount of films. So I don't think this is too far fetched.

I thought Safety Not Guaranteed was alright.

I remember the meme from back in the day. Somewhat disappointed that Push it to the Limit wasn't in the film.

Safety Not Guaranteed is a quirky love story that sucks you in the second it starts.

Jeff: "Lasers?"
Arnau: "What kind of lasers?"
Darius: "I don't know I'm not a friggin' stormtrooper."
Jeff: "This guy's awesome. He's over there thinking he's building a friggin time machine? Arnau what are the chances he could do that with these lasers?"
Darius: "He doesn't know -- he's not a stormtroooper either."
Arnau: "Stormtroopers don't know anything about lasers of time travel. They're blue collar workers."

Jeff: "No matter how tempting it will be, we're never, ever going to say 'Hey, leave your Star Wars figurines in the box because they'll be worth hundreds more..."

Kenneth: "I used to come up here and camp with the Boy Scouts, near here, when I was little. Do you know what Star Wars is?"
Darius: "Yes."
Kenneth: "Yeah. So when I was younger, I used to bring my Star Wars figures up here, you know because I didn't want to leave them back at the house because they get lonely. And um, some of the more cynical kids would make fun of me. They would, like, throw them in the fire and stuff."

Haha, the guy who did this interview will have his mind blown if it's true, such a little no name interview that could confirm such a huge thing.

This sure sounds like a GL hire to me. Like its a version of himself he's hiring. The prequels, directors style, scary.

or, a spin-off in the Star Wars Universe.

here's the thing about a director like this who isn't really an established name: they will have no where near the pull of an established one. therefore are more subject to outside (studio/whomever is in charge) influence. they wouldn't be able to pull their filmography out and say 'trust me, i know what im doing.'

so in the end, yes this could be an exciting choice but we could be getting a pre-destined film rather than a director's vision. i dunno, maybe that's best. no matter which way i look at it this is the toughest of all franchises to take on. say what you will about the CBM's, this is the mother of em all.

seems like there's a connection there, considering safety not guaranteed is about time travel as well.

I'm hoping he gets the job, rather than a big name. I don't always say this, but... I want a fan of Star Wars to inherit directing duties. Seems only right. Plus, I think the supposed "quirkiness" of Safety Not Guaranteed fits in well with Michael Arndt's body of work (Little Miss Sunshine & Toy Story).

And as I said on a previous article, I think he may already be signed on for Episode VII.

colin who???

no disrespect but i have to say NOOOOO....

lucas is still running the show, this guy is lucky if he gets it, almost a free ride, he'll have the studio and Gl running the show from behind the scenes...

I'm not familiar with him, but it does sound like a big franchise like Star Wars.

It has been quiet on the Justice League news front lately, so I don't think he's talking about that.

Another rumor debunked, if that DenOfGeek article is to be believed.

I'm sure Disney is really enjoying the wave of interest and speculation since the news of Ep 7 first broke. They are playing this information game (or lack thereof) just right.

can someone explain what grounds they are using to select this unknown for star wars, bear in mind, they have an abundance of excellent directors that have more experience and are trusted by the a-list...

i dont understand the logic behind this choice?

SupermanReturns2
SupermanReturns2 - 11/19/2012, 11:34 AM
@ gmckoy: probably because those directors command a higher % of the gate, and the studio/Lucas is looking for someone who won't be able to
demand as much while in production, and can be controlled easier.

Disney is no idiot... They own MARVEL and just purchased LucasFilm (with all the trimmings.) Disney will not Frak around with the next Star Wars movie under the "Mouse's Belt".. Disney Just banked a BILLION dollar movie with the Avengers "with" Joss Whedon directing. "Whedon made the Firefly series and that is a BRILLIANT/Han Solo style/space action Sci-Fi series made for T.V and ROCKED!". "If it's going to be any Disney director it's going to be Whedon to direct the next STAR WARS film"...
