Disney's Alan Horn Talks STAR WARS EPISODE VII; Addresses Matthew Vaughn Rumors

Disney head honcho Alan Horn talks here about how they managed to keep their acquisition of LucasFilm under wraps and refuses to confirm or deny rumours that Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) will helm Star Wars: Episode VII, but promises that an announcement is imminent.

It seems fair to say that no one saw Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm coming when the news broke last month in the form of a press release. Talking to Vulture recently, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn revealed exactly how they managed to keep the deal under wraps. "We threatened everybody with a blast from the Death Star!" he laughed before adding, "But really, I think everybody was mature about it. It's important to keep these things confidential, so people just kept their mouths shut." Of course, the news that there will be a whole new trilogy of Star Wars movies was included in that press release, but it should come as no surprise to learn that even less people knew about that. "It was a very small group. Probably a smaller group than knew about the attack on bin Laden!"

Since the announcement, there has been a lot of rumours about who will helm Star Wars Episode VII, but the name which seems to keep cropping up is X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn. Refusing to confirm whether those reports are true or not, he did say this about an upcoming announcement. "I would say you'll know soon. And it's got to come from Kathy Kennedy — we don't have the company yet!" For anyone still worrying about about what the studio have planned for the beloved characters, Horn wanted to assure fans that they have nothing at all to worry about. "We take very seriously the obligation to make a very good movie. Kathy is a very experienced producer; George Lucas is the godfather of that franchise and very, very involved on a consulting basis, so we feel very confident."

People need to remember Lucas made the goddamn franchise.

Yeah his writing is pretty shitty, but asking him to COMPLETELY stay away is stupid and selfish.

They have fantastic writers on these films, so assuming they get a great director, Lucas' involvement won't do no harm

If you honestly thought they weren't gonna make more Star Wars movies after Episode III when everything from A Nightmare on Elm Street to freakin' Robocop is being remade, you're a bloody idiot.

I'm happy that Vaughn might do it. But I'm not happy that he's not doing the trilogy. Vaughn is a one-hit wonder, one-shot kind of film maker. That's very disappointing, considering that everything he touches turns to gold

I love that they're very adamant that Lucas is still on-board with this project, but they keep emphasizing that he's there "as a consultant". It's like they're trying to placate both sides of the fence-- those who think Lucas is essential to the Star Wars franchise, and those who are desperate to see him done away with. So they say, "yeah, Lucas is still here-- but don't worry, guys, he's just consulting! He's got about as much input on these films as Stan Lee has had on everything he's consulted on!"

Lucas has become the franchise mascot. He's there to give the movies some semblance of continuity with the other six, but that's all, it seems-- it's an honorary position at most. And frankly, I'm cool with that.

Anyone who thinks Lucas shouldn't be involved isn't a true Star Wars fan. It's a fact. Look it up.

LEVITIKUZ has won me over with his unyielding enthusiasm. I say let him direct it. For free.

I just hope they announce the director soon. I'm tired of these stupid rumors and false confirmations. I can't wait till we start obsessing over the cast. Thats where the fun begins.

I"m as teed off about the crappy prequels as anyone. Will I say Lucas lost his way? Yeah. Will I say he should never direct another Star Wars movie again? Absolutely. But the man deserves respect. Not only did he change Scifi the way we knew it, but he revolutionized film making. From the special effects magic ILM has weaved throughout countless films to the greatness of Pixar, we can thank Lucas for all that. And two of the greatest trilogies ever (and while we're at it, we can thank Lucas for the idea of a cinematic trilogy). That's just my two cents.

Matthew Vaughn would deliver the goods. David Fincher's kind of a dream pick.

Hopefully it's not the director of cowboy and Aliens and Ironman 2.

Has no one watched the videos from Lucasfilm? They've already said that Lucas has written the stories and then passed them onto Kennedy to turn into the new trilogy. He's going to be all over these movies which is great because what are the best films in the saga? Empire and Return. And what's unique about them? Stories by Lucas, Directed by someone else.
I'm not saying he's a bad director I just worry when he has full creative control because film making is a collaborative medium and the new trilogy seemed to be all Lucas unlike the originals.
And I'm also on board with Vaughan as his movies speak for themselves. And if Favreau was given the job on the second or third film I'd like that too. He did do Zathura afterall and he seems like a big Star Wars fan. I can also imagine Andrew Stanton getting the gig as well seeing as he's already with Disney and the issues with John Carter were blamed on bad marketing and the film was generally pretty well received.
