J.J. Abrams Shares His Thoughts On Disney's Planned STAR WARS Spin-Offs

Despite Disney confirming that a new Star Wars film will be released every year starting in 2015, Episode VII director J.J. Abrams seemingly suggests that the success of the next installment will allow all the other movies to be made.

Usually, a sequel to a film isn't guaranteed until the first movie is a success. In the case of Star Wars, however, Disney and Lucasfilm are planning to release a new film in that franchise every year beginning in 2015 with Episode VII (which was recently confirmed at CinemaCon). Despite this, J.J. Abrams had this to say when speaking with MTV News during the Star Trek Into Darkness press junket, suggesting that more films depends on the success of Episode VII. "We're focusing right now on this because this movie feels like this is the one that has to work for anything else to work." The director continued, saying, "There are discussions about what would happen later and how to make this thing and to tell story, you can't look at it in a binary way," Abrams said. "It's obviously part of something much greater. To talk about those off-shoot films, that's something have to talk about with Kathleen Kennedy." Of course, this doesn't mean that we won't see more Star Wars films following 2015, as Episode VII is nearly guaranteed to be a smash. Perhaps Abrams is referring to the fact that VII will lay a new foundation down for the upcoming movies, and that they need to be sure that it's a solid one. What do you think?

Hold on a minute there, professor. Lucas broke it in pretty well as far back as the early 80's.

@LEVI you're about 2 years early (since we know nothing of the movie) or 12 years late (since Lucas did that with The Phantom Menace) for a comment like that. I'm still incredibly pissed off about 1313 though, especially as [frick]ing EA, one of the shittiest game companies around, now has the video game rights for all future Star Wars games.

Guys stop bitching.. What JJ is saying makes sense, you have to establish the base films before you do any spin offs, unless you want the spin off films to spin off last movies made (i.e the prequels) which is a terrible idea. As far as the film franchise goes, it is currently at rock bottom so there is nowhere to go but up.

New Mantra: "In basic logic and common sense we trust"

But I guess Fanboys need something to bitch about...

It's a shame, that no matter who was picked to be directed, people were gonna complain about it.

It doesn't matter if it was Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, Duncan Jones, Joss Whedon, or Darren Aronofsky, People were going to complain about it.

JJ Abrams has made some really good movies, I can't understand why anybody would have a problem with this. A lot of school Trekkies hated what he did with Star Trek, even though he ended up making Star Trek relevant again.

In my opinion, whenever you can make an adult movie about kids and make it work, that's good Writing/Directing right there.

When his Mission Impossible came out, it was the best Mission Impossible out at that time.

Fringe was great. Say what you want about Lost, but there is a reason it has such a huge fan base.

I heard Alias was great.

His movies/shows aren't perfect, but you can't tell me, he hasn't made anything that's pretty damn good.

The spin offs could be good though, especially the Boba Fett one! No guarantees obviously, but some of them sound really cool. Like Zack Snyder's Seven Jedi idea.

Abrams is also probably the best guy for Star Wars at this point. His filmmaking style hearkens back to blockbuster classics like the original Star Wars trilogy in a way no other director does nowadays. Something I realised watching Star Trek (2009) last night, is that if you pay very close attention, it's narrative is actually very similar to the original Star Wars trilogy. Abrams definitely knows his stuff, he's a fan, he's the guy for the job.

And did people actually watch The Clone Wars?

@ACira I actually watched the Clone Wars and loved it. Because it had a couple things going for them that the prequels didn't. And those things were great acting and great writing.

No Spin-offs. Just make the next episodes.

Spin-off milking will make an ass of the whole saga. Make it like everything else with shit all over the place. The TV show should satisfy spin-off material.

And we have already seen prequels and the original trilogy. Spin-off's suggest MORE shit in the past that we already know happened.

i dont know...i felt pretty butt raped after episodes 1-3, the special edition VHS, then the Special Edition DVD, the the Blu-Ray's, then the "Collectors Edition" Blu-ray. Then Lucas saying he was done with star wars because all the 'fan-boys' kept complaining because he was changing it to suit his vision.

Id say he did a good job of raping us all...

Episodes 1 and 2 are awful, but 3 was solid. It gets unfairly lumped in with the other 2.

I don't want spinoffs...is there some way that JJ's Episode VII can be good but somehow do bad enough that they don't make spinoffs?

ndwwrestler2 - 5/9/2013, 12:47 PM
As long as they do the spin-offs right, I have no problem with it.

How many people wanted a First Class movie? Very few I'm sure. And that movie turned out great.

in my opinion, the best parts of episode 3 were when Anakin raided the Jedi Temple, the obi/anakin saber duel and the credits.
