Joss Whedon Shares His Thoughts On STAR WARS EPISODE VII And J.J. Abrams

Revealing that he would have loved the opportunity to helm Star Wars Episode VII, the director confesses to having "a moment of rue" over the fact that he was already committed to The Avengers 2 and shares his thoughts on J.J. Abrams getting the job.

"There was a moment of rue that I was already committed," Joss Whedon admitted in a recent interview with Empire Online when asked how he felt about being unable to helm Star Wars Episode VII. The director is of course no stranger to the world of sci-fi and a movie such as this one seems tailor made for the man who brought us Firefly and its superb big screen follow-up, Serenity. However, Whedon was and still is already hard at work on a sequel to the biggest superhero movie of all-time, Marvel's The Avengers. "I'm not going to lie, because who didn't want to do that as a kid? But I think they got the right guy so just knowing that I'm going to enjoy the film when it comes out is great. I don't even have to do any work. Can J.J. also make Avengers...?" So, like most fans, Whedon clearly approves of the Star Trek director being the one to usher in a new wave of Star Wars movies. It is pretty interesting to wonder what a Joss Whedon helmed Star Wars and J.J. Abrams directed The Avengers 2 might look like though, wouldn't you agree?

Darkness was good, script was a little corny and the first act was just Kirk getting demoted, reinstated, diverting the captains chair. But Abrams did a good job.

Star Trek into Darkness is the BEST movie of 2013 so far! I loved it and its going to be a tough one to beat! Just keep Joss with Avengers and JJ with Star Trek and Star Wars! I cant wait for Star Trek 3 and Episode VII!

NO!!! Mr Whedon...don't even suggest J.J. for The Avengers.

Love how Godzillafart asserts his opinion like the truth.

I thought Into Darkness was a fantastic film. Brilliant until the last 10 minutes, which I agree was rushed and just strangely put together. Still, I admire them for leaving the main character out of the final action sequence.

Abrams will nail Star Wars

Wouldn't be surprised if Whedon got to direct Episode VIII or IX. I'm pretty sure Avengers 2 will be his last take on the series. I doubt any director would want to put so much of their life on hold while you direct two more major films which are the cornerstone for two phases.

From Simon Pegg, to all lens flare haters:

Probably some film student who wanted to demonstrate his or her knowledge of film terminology, thus elevating themselves to an assumed level of critical superiority, which gave them the kind of smug, knowing smile that indicates a festering sour grape, fizzing in the pit of their own ambition. It’s become a sort of communal stick to have a crack at JJ with, mostly by people who didn’t know what the f--k lens flare was, until someone started sneering the term all over their blog. It demonstrates JJ’s supreme talent as a film maker that the main means of knocking him is to magnify a throw away artistic choice, into some sort of hilarious failing. Lens flare is essentially an anomaly caused by light hitting the lens and creating refracted shapes. Because it draws attention to the fact that we are looking at a filmed event, it actually creates a subliminal sense of documentary realism and makes the moment more vital and immediate. In the same way Spielberg spattered his shots with bloody seawater in Saving Private Ryan, JJ suggests that the moment we are in is so real and alive, there just isn’t time to frame out all the light and activity. The irony is by acknowledging the film’s artifice, you are enhancing the reality of the moment. It’s clever and I love it. On set we call it ‘best in show’ and our amazing director of photography, Dan Mindel has a special technique to achieve it. To the detractors, I offer a polite f--k you and suggest you find a new stick to beat us with, if being a huge, boring neggyballs is necessary for your personal happiness.

Yeah more than four people dis-liked Star Trek-ID; I was more disappointed than anything; I was expecting something amazing and ID came off as a good episode of one of the Star Trek TV shows; not a grandiose multi-million dollar movie.

I don't take sides with the flare issue
because to be honest
I never really took notice or exception.
It's true that it wasn't til it became an internet topic
that I became aware of it but they still don't
take me out of the moment nor distract me

I really thought Star Trek has more lens flares than Into Darkness. I really love what J.J. do with the lens flares.

So more lens flares in Star Wars J.J! Just joking but we all know that there will be lens flares in Star Wars episode 7 or maybe not.

Hi Guys,

I know it's not the topic but I'm probably seeing Man of Steel tonight :) (some sort of pre-release screening with surveys after the movie). I'm not sure since the title of the movie was not mentioned when I signed in to participate. Anyway, if it's in fact Man of Steel I will post my thoughts later. Hope it's good.

Sorry for any mistakes/spelling etc. English is not my mother tounge.

Take care ya all.

I think Star Wars fans will be more grateful to JJ after he does Star Wars than Star Trek fans did, because after the prequels, the Star Wars fans, are going to look for anything better.

I can see it now. When the avengers are doing that battle stance , as the camera pans over ironman's arc reactor.. Lens flares. Pans over to Captain America's shield, lens flare, Thors hammer, lens flare , hulk roaring, lens flare behind him
The Avengers title card with lens flare. Directed by JJ Abrams

Joss has talent. But he and Abrams are both overrated.

Episode VII will suck because Kathleen Kennedy has no balls and got a safe overrated director who makes average decent mimics of better movies. Super 8 is no Close Encounters or E.T. and Star Trek 09 is no Star Wars 77

If Abrams made his movies back in the 80's or early 90's people would be calling his movies classics.

But we seem to live in a time, where people want to nitpick every little thing and not enjoy a movie.

@mcdougalbugle It isn't about being risky or safe, it's about the best pick.

Abrams makes action movies with great characters that respect the previous movies that came before.

If making really good movies and being really well known makes him overrated, then being overrated isn't too bad.

Would you prefer she picked someone like M.Night Shyamalan?

You know the similarities of all the people you just quoted? They never directed, produced, or wrote a blockbuster film.

Sometimes a safe pick is a good thing if you want to make a good movie.

Godzilla said it best for me :

@DrDoom: Star Trek Into Darkness was crap...although the problem was the writing more than Abrams. Abrams did go completely crazy with the lens flares, and the whole movie felt a bit rushed, but the writing, particularly the last 4th of the film was absolute garbage.

Abrams first Star Trek and Super 8 were great. I think he is a good fit for Star Wars.

Yup.

Star Trek 2 was motha[frick]in awesome!!!!

I watched it regular, the 3D, now I'm gonna go see IMAX 3D.

If someone didn't like it, all I can say is that reveals alot about that person.
