New STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Concept Art Features A Redesigned TIE Fighter

The preferred space-craft of the Empire has been given an update for J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens, though it is still recognizable as a version of the classic TIE Fighter from the original trilogy. We can also make out some red-cloaked Imperial Guards... but who could they be guarding?

Here we have some leaked concept art of a new-look Star Wars: The Force Awakens TIE Fighter. Obviously it's quite a bit larger than the classic ship, but the cockpit and wing designs remain pretty much the same. Probably the most interesting thing about the image is the presence of the Imperial Guards. These mysterious red-cloaked figures were only ever around in the original movies when Emperor Palpatine was on screen, so does this mean the evil old bastard will be returning for The Force Awakens? Well, that's a bit of a jump of course... but it stands to reason that these silent sentries are guarding someone of importance. A new Emperor perhaps?

Looks "royal" in a sense and less tactical, must serve as transport for some political leader like the Lambda Shuttle in ROTJ.

This is what I'm really looking forward to with this movie - details about how the surviving remnants of the Empire functioned after the deaths of Palpatine and Vader. The original trilogy makes it seem like everyone simply lives happily ever after and that the Empire is forever gone...but hopefully JJ is clever enough to tackle some of the political ramifications of the conclusion of Return of the Jedi.

This type of political intrigue would make the politics of the prequels look like CSPAN...which it kind of already was. Yawn.

"A new Emperor perhaps?"

I would guess them to be guarding either Andy Serkis or Gwendoline Christie's rumored characters.

This isn't a 'redesigned' TIE Fighter. You can see the traditional one in the background. This is simply a new sub-type.

Looks like a cross between a TIE/vs Shuttle and an Imperial shuttle.

I am most interested about who is ruling the Empire. Now that we know that it endured in some capacity after ROTJ this question is left wide open. We tend to default to the Sith/Dark Jedi as the natural choice but it would make little sense if you think about it. There were only two Sith in all the Empire. Having a military character in the vein of Thrawn taking over is much more logical.

Oh, though I am extremely skeptical about this new film I must admit this new TIE shuttle is sweet.

I'm guessing this is Andy Serkis' Darth Plagueies who now rules the Empire

Sorry but this doesn't even look remotely true, maybe as some fan made "wouldn't it be cool if...." but as an Imperial Shuttle design I call fake, like most of the other 'leaks'. From actual footage the Stormtroopers have redesigned helmets but they forgot that on this picture?

It would be cool to see those Imperial Guards do something instead of standing.
They look badass, maybe we will see them in action.

Huh.
I like it!

Man, this stuff just keeps on leaking... I can't wait for December!

Starting to think a lot of these leaks are actually from Disney though...just keeping the fans distracted until the movie's done...
