SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Reportedly Gets Name Change For Release In China

The upcoming film Solo: A Star Wars Story will reportedly be receiving a name change for it's release in China in a bid to save it from the same fate as Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

After Star Wars: The Last Jedi was pulled from theaters in China after only two weeks due to abysmal attendance, the upcoming release of Solo: A Star Wars Story will attempt to avoid the same fate by reportedly changing the title of the movie.

With the Star Wars brand not having the impact in China that it does in other parts of the world and in an effort to distance the new movie from the recent poor performance of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, China will now call the upcoming movie Ranger Solo and remove Star Wars from the title completely.  The hope is Chinese movie-goers will go see the movie not knowing it is a Star Wars film.

Whether this tactic will work remains to be seen.  Solo: A Star Wars Story is scheduled for release on May 25th in the US, with the Chinese release coming slightly later.

Holy heck! Seems a tad desperate. I’m not a fan of its current title but because Ep:4 came out when I was 3 I’ll still watch it...

because it’s Star Wars🤷🏼‍♂️

Disney is stupid if they think this won't underperform at its current date.

While it's true many movies get weird translations in other countries that would make it unrecognizable to the original audience the big difference is this is being done after three Star Wars movies have already come out with the Star Wars name.
Normally when a series title is changed it's done from the get go to appeal to that audience's culture better from the start.

This however is a case of, well the last Star Wars movie didn't do well there so let's try re-branding it to fool people.

This would be like if after a Mario game failed in American Nintendo decided the best way to make sure the next game did well was to re-name it in America.

Is there a petition to retitle "The Last Jedi - NOT a Star Wars episode" already ?

@CapA - oh my I wish. Wish the next could be called episode 8 and they just take a mulligan for that disaster.

Happens all the time to be honest but I can't help but laugh at Ranger Solo being the title.

Does anyone think the guy from Baby Driver would have made a better young Han Solo?

Maybe they wouldn't have had to bring in an acting coach.

Who'd have thought a movie about trying to take down a brutally oppressive regime which keeps the people in-line through whatever means necessary wouldn't go down well in China...

@528491 -

I know it's for a joke... but;

TFA and Rogue One did great in China.

TLJ is where it flopped and was considered so bad it had to be removed from cinemas because nobody was watching it. TLJ also had arguably the least to do with the concept you mentioned.

@Scarilian - yeah, its a weird inconsistency, though I'm actually stunned that the Chinese authorities allowed Last Jedi to even be released in cinemas, given that one of the movie's key messages is that even the smallest act of defiance can light the flames of rebellion which can bring down an empire. I'd have thought that would be the very last thing they would want to encourage amongst their populace given how effective they are at cracking down on peaceful protests elsewhere.
