STAR WARS: Colin Trevorrow Weighs In On Possibly Returning To The Franchise After EPISODE IX Firing

Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow was originally attached to helm Star Wars Episode IX, but would he consider returning to the franchise after being fired by Lucasfilm? Check out his comments here!

After helming the record-breaking Jurassic World, it made perfect sense for Colin Trevorrow to be tasked with directing Star Wars Episode IX. However, "creative differences" would lead to the filmmaker being dismissed from the project, and just a couple of months later, J.J. Abrams was brought on board to helm the critically panned The Rise of Skywalker

Story details and concept art for Trevorrow's Duel of the Fates eventually leaked online, with the vast majority of Star Wars fans agreeing that his planned finale looked better than what Abrams' and Justice League writer Chris Terrio dreamed up.

During a recent interview with the Jurassic World Dominion director, ComicBook.com asked Trevorrow if he would consider returning to the franchise after his firing. Fans probably wouldn't be against the idea, but Trevorrow seems unsure about heading back to that Galaxy Far, Far Away.

"I don't know," Trevorrow said. "Not because of Star Wars, but because I've spent 8 or 9 [years] making new versions of the things we love when we were kids. You know? In one place or another. There's not just a lot of pressure on that, but it also casts a shadow over everything else that you want to do."

"I made a small film after Jurassic World, and I was the 'Director of Star Wars' when I made it," the filmmaker added. "And I think to be able to step out of that a little bit and not having everything I do be in the context of our belief systems is interesting to me."

Next up for Trevorrow is War Magician, a movie about British illusionist Jasper Maskelyne. He used magic to help defeat the Nazis during World War II, and Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) is attached to star. It doesn't currently have a release date, however.

As for Star Wars, we're betting that the director is no more interested in working for Lucasfilm again than fired Solo: A Star Wars Story helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

After Jurassic World Dominion, I'm not sure if I wanted him to wrap up the saga either. His script had some great elements, but I rather see that in a spin-off or show.

Anyway, his new movie does sound interesting. Maskelyne's story is fun, with him going from teaching Houdini tricks to soldier to simply just entertaining them.

I get it. There's an incredible amount of pressure to be the director of beloved IP's like Star Wars, the Jurassic Park/World franchise, etc...

You're constantly under a microscope and every direction or writing choice you make is picked apart to death.

@thewanderer - in fairness, he f@#$s up original stories too. Book of Henry is still his worst movie, and it's not even close.

Dominion was complete trash. He also wrote and produced Fallen Kingdom, which was laughably bad. His last indie film was considered one of the worst movies ever made.

Unfortunately Colin Trevorrow has not made a good movie in a ver, very long time.

@TheVandalore - Safety Not Guaranteed. If you haven’t seen it you really should.

@TheVandalore - Safety Not Guaranteed and there are quite a few people who enjoyed his first Jurassic World.

@MrDandy - I hated all of the new Jurassic Worlds. I'll have to look into Safety Not Guaranteed.

At some point a wealthy Star Wars fan needs to finance a CGI version of Duel of the Fates.

@Luke8 - Imagine a well financed animated Legends series or series of animated movies. Like Star Wars What Ifs, you could have endless great stories whether new or versions of the movies that didn't happen, or adaptations of the Legends novels. Give each one to a different director with a different animation style, you could have different voice casts etc...they could do so much with it.

@GothamCityCop - Like have the Yuuzhan Vong and Mara Jade? I think I’d kill for that. The What Ifs would be endless as well.

@Luke8 - I think Mara Jade might show up in the new canon that Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are working on in The Mandalorian/Ahsoka stories.

Duel of the Fates might have been good enough to redeem the whole trilogy. Seems like all the neater elements of Rise of Skywalker came from Duel of the Fates.
On that note, as someone who used to rag on TLJ regularly, with time, I feel pretty bad for Rian Johnson. I doubt the prequels would have aged as well as they have in popular consciousness if Revenge of the Sith wasn't such a banger. TLJ is still bottom of the barrel for me, but at least Rian tried to do something different and shake up the formula. TROS was just bad Star Wars porn that undermined everything interesting TLJ was going for. When I think of Duel of the Fates, I wonder how good it would have actually turned out, and if it would have stuck the landing for the sequels and opened the door to reappraisal for them. As it sits, I highly doubt the sequels will be given the reappraisal the prequels are getting.

Even though Dominion was pure garbage - his film, Duel of the Fates, would have been MUCH better than the shit we got with Rise of Skywalker.

It's so weird that he came up with a better idea for Episode 9 than the one we ultimately got.
