STAR WARS Franchise Looking To Bring Female Directors And Screenwriters Aboard

In the not-too-distant future, we could have our first female directors and/or screenwriters leaving their marks on the Star Wars franchise. Do you think a female-focused spin-off would meet expectations of the boisterous, male-dominated Star Wars fandom?

Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy recently stated that she would like a female director or screenwriter to help develop one of the upcoming projects but there's a problem - none have called the Lucasfilm offices to inquire.  "I had not had one single phone call from a woman telling me that she really, really wants to direct a ‘Star Wars’ movie," Kennedy told The Wrap.  Shec continued, " They need to be the ones picking up the phone and saying, ‘Hey, let me tell you what ‘Star Wars’ means to me and how much I could do with it."

Well, apparently the message has been received and a high-profile Hollywood agent, Adriana Alberghetti, has brokered meetings for her female clients (4 directors and 3 screenwriters) that are interested in Star Wars.  The names are currently a secret but Alberghetti represents the likes of Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer),  S.J. Clarkson (Marvel's Jessica Jones),  Linda Woolverton (Maleficent) and more.

Ever since screenwriter Leigh Brackett passed away while working on the script for The Empire Strikes Back (her draft was eventually tossed, thus she received no credit), the Star Wars franchise has been perceived as a male-only IP, from a creative standpoint.  Though fans of the franchise are predominantly male (70% of advance ticket purchases for The Force Awakens were made by males 18-34 yrs old), Star Wars definitely has a sizable contingent of female fans.  While most of the sequels and spin-offs currently announced have set their creative teams, don't be surprised by the eventual announcement of a Star Wars project that spearheaded by a female creative team.  After all, Disney plans to release at least one, new Star Wars related project every year,  starting with The Force Awakens.

Marti Noxon was a great writer on Buffy, though she was emulating Joss' style, I would like to see her sort of be her own person, and this would really do it.

@ScarletWarlock, I'm going to have to disagree with you. Noxon had a very different style from Whedon on that series. All the writers did from Season 3 onwards. Whedon was really a jack of all trades while Noxon was mostly into the pain and chains. They even joke about it on a commentary of a episode together. All the writers had to emulate his style in a way because he was the voice of the characters but they brought a bit of themselves to each of their scripts. My favorite was always Jane Espenson because she brought the comedy and silliness.

I'm not a feminist, nor am i Social Justice Warrior, but that article image totally clashes with the article.
What we're talking about is opening up the boys club and allowing women to be recognised for their talent and being encouraged to apply for the job.
What that image shows is just pretty girls.

I thought 'Rouge One' had a female lead?
Isn't Felicity Jones the star?

So far both the new Star Wars films have central female characters that are really the main focus. We all know that Ep. 7 is all about Rey. She is essentially the new 'Luke'.

I don't mean disrespect for her I just mean the way the dialogue was put, they tried to insert words that Joss sort of came up with like, "wiggy", she is of course doing her own thing, but she's writing for characters that Joss created and they say VERY particular things, so I like her episodes a lot, its just that it isn't entirely her vision so to speak, so I'm not exactly sure what her writing is like completely unhinged and entirely her, you know. I have a lot of respect for the writing staff on Buffy, so I do hope she gets the job, she is very talented and hasn't really got much work aside from the Buffy, in other words I think she is is underrated.

I disagree.

The image isn't derogatory nor are the women scantily clad.
They are in soldier uniforms. There is nothing overtly sexual about the image at all.

What that image shows is just pretty girls.

So it's just the fact that they are 'pretty'? Their faces?
Rey is pretty too. What's wrong with showing a pretty woman dressed as a Stormtrooper?

I would really love to see a Star Wars movie directed by James Cameron in the future.

Just cause it's a female director doesn't mean the movie will have more of a female focus. I'd love to see Kathryn Bigelow do a SW movie.

@GetsugaTensho22 - Where and why does female creative team translate to only ugly girls? Maybe check your issues at the door and engage in mature discussion about the topic.

Because there's no wrong with blatant tokenism...

I'd rather they go for good directors than pre-sorting with a genital check. Not a great sign and unfortunate that Kathleen Kennedy needs to resort to that. But let's face it, Star Wars is dead and some of you might be in denial, but we're all getting Lion Kinged 2 by Disney on this.

How about we hire writers/directors based on their talent and artistic ability and not their gender? If they happen to be female, great, if not then oh well.

They should be more worried about finding the right people for the job regardless of gender or race. Still can't believe Trevorrow got hired for Episode IX... Jurassic world might've made a ton of money, but it's one of the few movies I actively hated the more I watched...

Probably should focus on finding good writers, regardless of their sex.

Bring up women or minorities and you get the SHEEP lining up to be all politically correct. Talent should be hired on ability not their sex or race. Hiring women just because they are women is not only stupid but it is sexist and discrimination against men.

A persons sex or race should not factor in the hiring process of writers or directors. EVER!
