STAR WARS: Hayden Christensen Recalls What George Lucas Told Him About Fans Not "Getting" The Prequels

Obi-Wan Kenobi star Hayden Christensen has revealed why he believes some Star Wars fans didn't "get" the prequels while recalling a conversation with George Lucas. Find his full comments right here...

The Star Wars prequels were definitely divisive when they were first released, but the apparent hatred for The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith only increased in the years that followed.

However, the tide has changed somewhat recently; we're not sure if it's because the sequels were even more divisive or the fact that kids who grew up watching those movies now look back at them fondly. Either way, they've become a real talking point among Star Wars fans again.

There's also been a huge amount of excitement surrounding Hayden Christensen's Obi-Wan Kenobi return, and the actor looked back at his early stint as Anakin Skywalker during a recent interview with The Guardian (via SFFGazette.com). "I think it just goes back to the sort of ownership that people feel towards these characters," he said of the mixed response to the movies.

"It’s almost like public domain. These characters really do belong to everybody," Christensen continued. "I guess the impression that I got from [Star Wars creator] George Lucas was that if they don’t like them, then they don’t 'get' it -- and that was good enough for me."

That's an interesting take on the much-maligned trilogy, though we're pretty sure the actor is referring to the fact that George Lucas has always said he made the movies for children (not hardcore fanboys). Either way, Christensen would go on to also defend the awkward dialogue we heard in the Star Wars prequels, putting it down to the franchise being set in "a unique world."

Regardless of whether you agree with the comments made here, it's awesome to see the Darth Vader actor defend his work, especially as we'd argue that he did his best with the material he had to work with.

Based on today's episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi, though, we'd say Christensen is finally getting his shot at redemption...

“Are you brain dead? I'm not going in there with two Jedi! Send a droid.“

I don’t get the criticism. The prequel dialogue was great!

@LilJimmy - in George's defense, I think the dialogue was secretly genius. They are sound effects to him, and they work exactly in that context

@bkmeijer1 - Yes. The republic had to fall, and so it did. Reminds me of that mini zombie apocalypse from love, death, and robots.

In an interview with Ewan and Hayden they said that the generation they made these movies for was the generation that was growing up with these movies. And that generation very much enjoys the prequels, I'm part of that generation and can agree.

And while I loathe the sequels I do appreciate the notion that the generation growing up with the sequels will look back at these movies fondly.

Current Star Wars media is never for "the old" fans but rather the children. And that's fair.

@Blergh - exactly. What I did like about the prequels especially, and that I only really started to appreciate later, is the dense story and themes hidden in there that I didn't pick up as a kid.

And unfortunately, I don't have that with the sequels.

@Blergh -
Good point. Star Wars is really made for kids and the young at heart. The generation that was coming of age when he made these were the Sci-Fi generation. They watched Star Trek and had the Apollo program happening in real time. Unfortunately the sequels were not made with kids in mind and that was one of the main reasons they didnt' work.

@Blergh - I remember taking a day from work (career job) and waiting 5 and 1/2 hours in line to buy the allotted 12 tickets for opening night of Phantom Menace. I was #19 in line and got a whole lotta street cred (geek street, that is) for that score.

Man……to be THAT guy again, even for a bit.

I agree sith everything he and George Lucas says here. The internet was so loud when it came to these prequels that my voice was quiet in regards to the matter

:spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi below ep 3 below:

I just watched Willow 2 days ago. I'd never seen it, and I was interested in watching the show when it comes out so I figured it was time.

The film is directed by Ron Howard, but from what little I know it was a George Lucas story and production, similar to Indiana Jones and him working with Spielberg as director, and I guess even the Star Wars original trilogy and working with various directors.

The second the film started I felt like I was watching a classic Lucas film from my childhood. It had light hearted elements and comedy and goofy characters and overacting. It was charming, if not a bit uneventful by today's standards. But the films final act was pretty good and I left the movie feeling excited about the new Willow.

But I had that George Lucas fuzzy feeling after thinking about the themes and the good and evil aspects and the general mythology.

It was nice.

Then tonight I saw Vader snapping necks and dangling Obi-Wan in fire and a storm trooper get lobbed in half by a laser gate.....

Now.... I'm not saying those things are bad... I'm actually not really sure wtf I'm trying to say.....

Except for maybe I miss George Lucas being involved... maybe.

Idk... I'm very confused lol

@UGLYsonic - And here I was, thinking I'd be safe from spoilers in a non-spoiler article.

But yeah, I get what you mean. With the sequels as well, it was just missing a certain Lucasness.
UGLYsonic
UGLYsonic - 6/1/2022, 8:36 AM
@bkmeijer1 - shit... my bad. I just assume anyone ballsy enough to be actively reading comments in an article about the show they aren't up to date on is kinda playing with fire. If I'm avoiding spoilers about Obi-Wan, I'm not even clicking on a Star Wars article till I'm up to date, much less reading comments on the article.

But my bad.

bkmeijer1 - 6/1/2022, 8:39 AM
@UGLYsonic - I'll admit, it is definitely risky going into a Star Wars article these days. But it is a risk I'm willing to take, especially if it involves people's thoughts on Lucas and Disney made movies. Always fun to read
UGLYsonic
UGLYsonic - 6/1/2022, 8:48 AM
@Vigor - sorry. Since you both said something I added a spoiler warning.

I guess I just assumed if people were trying to avoid spoilers and haven't watched they wouldn't be on a Star Wars article after the episode has aired. I know if I'm not able to see something right away, I don't even click on articles or even visit web sites, simply because 1) I know how the internet is and there are honest to goodness jerks trying to ruin things, but also 2) the fans who have seen it want to talk about it with others who have.

So I assume if you are on here, you are acknowledging the risk you are taking yourself by going into a Star Wars comment section, rather than policing others about what to talk about. Not saying either of you are policing, you've been very polite, and I do apologize if I spoiled anything (you aren't being spoiled on much). But I do apologize.

But yeah, If I care THAT much not to be spoiled, I make sure that I don't set myself up to be spoiled. It's really tempting fate at a certain point lol
UGLYsonic
UGLYsonic - 6/1/2022, 8:49 AM
@bkmeijer1 - yeah, I way the risks too sometimes and end up getting spoiled a bit and regretting it sometimes lol I know the draw and the temptation lol

Sorry again.
