STAR WARS: Liam Neeson Has A Problem With The Franchise's Many Big And Small Screen Spin-Offs

As Qui-Gon Jinn, Liam Neeson remains one of the most iconic parts of the Star Wars franchise. However, in a new interview, the actor shares his concerns that it's expanding a little too much. Check it out!

Liam Neeson took on the role of Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and while he's since lent his voice to animated versions of the character, it wasn't until Obi-Wan Kenobi that we saw him return to the live-action realm. As a Force Ghost, the actor only had a minor role in the series, but it was a memorable one.

While it's been decades since Neeson shot the first of George Lucas' prequels, it's clear the role, and Star Wars in general, still mean a lot to him.

In a new interview with Conan O'Brien (via SFFGazette.com), the actor jokingly described the franchise as a "cult" before sharing his thoughts on its expansion under Disney's watch. "There [are] so many movies and spin-offs," Neeson explained, "and I think, you're diluting the whole thing."

This isn't the first time he's expressed those concerns, but there are a few other fun anecdotes in the video below, including the fact he and Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Ewan McGregor found themselves making lightsaber noises while shooting. "George [Lucas] said, 'Let's cut there; boys, we can add that in later.'"

It's true the franchise has expanded massively in recent years, with a host of animated and live-action TV shows on Disney+ like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian. Throw in movies like Rogue One and Solo alongside the ever-divisive sequel trilogy, and Neeson isn't wrong that there's a lot more Star Wars content available these days beyond the prequel and original trilogies.

That's mostly been welcomed by fans, but Lucasfilm has struggled to remain consistent since being acquired by Disney. After a number of new projects were announced at Star Wars Celebration back in April, the hope is the franchise can bounce back in theaters after 2019's The Rise of Skywalker disappointed.

Neeson appeared to have fun with his Obi-Wan Kenobi cameo, so while a full-blown return is off the table, we're hoping he might show up again somewhere. However, he may not wish to contribute to the franchise's ongoing expansion!

I can't wait until the Ryan Johnson Star Wars Trilogy kicks off to give this franchise nice new original story!

Well that would subvert expectations, that's for sure!

@Forthas - the fans don't want an original story.

@Toonstrack - I can't say I agree! I think fans were upset about the franchise upending what is canon. I do think they are open for other stories even ones that have characters unrelated to the first Trilogy.

@Forthas - haha no

Ask any "fan" what should he done and 90% of them will say "live action kotor" or a remake of some other thing they liked once but again. They dotn want original content they want the movies to recreate a feeling they had when they were 9, and nothing can do that cuz they arent 9

It's very easy to dilute the franchise, he's not wrong. Diluting is relative to quality though. The third trilogy was not good. BOBF was a cash grab. Obi-Wan was sub par. If all of the properties were as consistent as Mando, Andor and Ahsoka so far, you wouldn't hear these complaints.

@WhatIfRickJames - I agree with you, but there seems to be a pattern here.

Andor, Ashoka, Mando or Rogue One didn't use OT characters as much as the other did. And even when they did, they've been homages more than actual new stories for them.
So even if those aren't perfect, they're at least not [frick]ing up what people love.

Solo, the sequels, boba, obi wan, all were trying to make something new with OT characters. And it is very hard to do that when you're not Lucas himself. I would argue that Solo and Ep7 were at clunky but not bad per se, but the rest was [frick]ing trash.

@WhatIfRickJames - Mando S3 was sub par and Ahsoka has done nothing to impress me thus far.

@Toonstrack - it is what it is to me. 1 was meh, 2 was semi decent, 3 was decent. I can rewatch the prequels much more than I can the sequels for sure

Franchise fatigue is real. I know some fans like more and more content. But for some of the rest of us, it’s just exhausting to keep up with. Also bad projects do tarnish the brand.

It seems like anything popular will lead to more and more content. Maybe it’s just inevitable.

Here’s hoping more new original IP comes out and is good!

Yeah. Part of the appeal is that it goes away for a while. Keeps things fresh and exciting when it returns.

The problem is when you dilute the product with bad entries. One bad entry can turn off casual fans. But multiple bad entries can create an unrecoverable fatigue that may destroy a franchise. Look at the DC Brand. There is a chance it may never recover. James Gunn is going to try his best but ultimately the general audience will deliver the final nail in the coffin.

Agree to the fullest. A good chunk of SW content nowadays just isn't that good or plain underwhelming.
IronGenesis

My problem with SW nowadays and this is all me.

All the new material, save a few things, all look like fans dressing up and “playing Star Wars”.

Just too many of the actors look to Earthy (especially some modern hair cuts) that make it all just look too fake.

Most of this complaint is probably not fully rational 😂!

The Star Wars franchise has always been diluted, look at the massive amounts of books and comics that take place in the Saga timeline.

@KaptainKhaos - I think it's different.

Live action is where star wars started.
books comics and video games are in a different category, it's just something on the side.

What made Star Wars exciting back in the prequel days and even the OT days was that it was known that there were only going to be three movies and that's it. When it's limited, it feels like a special privilege to be there to experience it. It made each entry that much more anticipated.

Too much of a good thing is still too much.

I love pizza but having it everyday will make me dislike it.

I love burgers but eating it everyday will make you tired of it eventually.

When Drtriggerr gives blowjobs every single day I'm sure he lost the love for doing it but he is forced to do it because he has bills to pay🥲

At some point star wars and DC and marvel have to scale it back.

It's just too much💁

@AmazingFILMporg - Audiences can support 2 Star Wars shows a year -- if they are good, well-written shows. But with few exceptions, they suck. Same is true of the listing ship called Marvel Studios.
SethBullock
SethBullock - 8/31/2023, 11:13 PM
@AmazingFILMporg - Problem is not so much quantity but quality, imo.

If all the new Star Wars, Marvel or DC movies and tv shows were great, or at least good, there wouldn't be so many complaints.

But almost everything they have released lately, for the last few years, has been trash.

If you have to eat sh*tty pizza and sh*tty burgers everyday, that's a problem, but I could eat good pizzas and good burgers forever.

Maybe releasing so much content is impacting the quality, but tbh I think even if they scaled it all back, the problem would still exist, and that's the sh*tty products they keep releasing, they need to focus in bringing back the good stuff somehow.
