According to several websites now, George Lucas has official plans to re-release the entire Star Wars Saga in 3D!

This probably comes to no surprise because it has been rumored for awhile. Lucas was waiting for 3D technology to really be developed further and now that most theaters are equipped with 3D screens and successes like James Cameron's Avatar, Star Wars can reach a wider audience at the best quality.

Lucas is overseeing the entire process of converting the 6 films into 3D to make sure everything is done perfectly and not cheesy like other films that are filmed in regular 2D formats and then later converted to 3D.

Fox plans on distributing the 3D version of 1999's The Phantom Menace first in 2012 and then each sequential movie yearly following that. (Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi)

By then, Lucas also hopes, enough of the market will have switched to 3D televisions so by 2017 he can deliver Star Wars 3D on DVD for the best home Star Wars viewing experience yet.

Just wait till we can see a 3D trench run!
