STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Concept Art Reveals How Dark Rey's Lightsaber References Darth Vader

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker concept artist Matthew Savage has shared some awesome concept art from the movie offering a closer, detailed look at the double-bladed lightsaber wielded by Dark Rey...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker failed to fully take advantage of the "Dark Rey" concept, and her appearance boiled down to little more than what we saw in the trailers for the movie. That was a real disappointment, especially as there was so much speculation doing the rounds beforehand.

Something which was undeniably cool, though, was the double-bladed lightsaber the young Jedi's vision wielded. There are already prop versions on the market, but concept artist Matthew Savage has now taken to Instagram to share a closer look at the blade, and to drop some interesting new details.

As you can see, he explains that director J.J. Abrams wanted it to include a nod to Darth Vader, and if you take a closer look, you'll likely realise what that is. Getting this insight is definitely appreciated, and it's just a shame that more time wasn't spent focusing on this twisted version of Rey.

Check out the concept art in the Instagram post below:

I don't really see it, reminds me more of a lightsaber pike

To make a random comparison, the appearance of this lightsaber is like the BMW Z3 in Goldeneye: despite it being a Bond car--with all the cool weapons and gadgetry--it ended up doing absolutely nothing, making it completely pointless.

Isn’t it funny how Rian Johnson did a throwback to the throne room moment and dark side cave vision sequence in TLJ so IX wouldn’t be retreading old ground ?

@TheJustinHammer - I disagree.. TLJ did the throwbacks perfectly. Had new spins on them.

Dark side cave showed Luke a variety of things. He’s turning to the dark side/becoming Vader/Vader is his family. For Rey, it gave her nothing. Because she was nobody.

The throne room was also different. Kylo achieved what Vader never could in a way (overthrow the “Emperor” and become the new leader). Thing is, Vader found peace in his family. Kylo kept refusing his family in search of purpose, but can’t find any.

I’ve tried to like this movie. It’s a thing that just kind of happens on the screen. I can see why my gf doesn’t like action movies when it’s this dull in story or character development. Rey heals the snake, which anyone would instantly kill, and it opens the passage like a video game. Yikes.

Can someone pls explain to me how it is a functional lightsaber when folded? I mean, how the hell do you weird it with a double handle? Unless her hands are XXXXL.

It's hilarious how Disney seems to think that people care about The Rise of Skywalker but tries to make them forget that Solo even exists when fan reception to The Rise of Skywalker was FAR WORSE than anything else in the Star Wars saga, and currently the holder of the title of worst Star Wars movie ever reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes.

People just don't like the postlogy. They don't like Kylo Ren, they don't like Rey, they don't like Cynic Luke, they hated Space Leia, they don't like the porgs... I just want to forget than any of this ever happened. I like Rogue One, I'm okay with Solo, but I will never accept this garbage.

It is interesting that Solo hasn't been capitalised upon. There's defo potential to have Han or Lando appear in live action at some point. The insistence that the sequel trilogy should be revered is also odd. Too much of this and the prequels now seems like missed opportunities to explore more interesting stories. Take the failure of Yoda to recognise threats in AOTC - you'd think the Rebels would have bombed the crap out of Kamino for allowing the order 66 specification to occur.
