STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Concept Art Sees Kylo Ren Entering Palpatine's Very Different Cloning Lab

Some newly revealed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker concept art sees Kylo Ren arrive in a very different cloning laboratory, potentially coming face to face with someone from his past in the process...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker made a lot of mistakes, but the ball was definitely dropped when it came to how Emperor Palpatine's return was handled. It took a tie-in novel to explain some of the movie's biggest plot holes from those parts of the "Skywalker Saga" finale, and even then it still didn't really make much sense!

It was on the ancient Sith planet of Exegol that we first learned Palpatine had cloned himself, and amassed a loyal army of followers. A throwaway moment confirmed that Supreme Leader Snoke was a clone (or one of Palpatine's creations), but some newly revealed concept art elaborates on that.

As you can see, in an earlier version of The Rise of Skywalker, Kylo Ren was set to arrive in a laboratory not all that different to those on Kamino, with aesthetics similar to those we see on the Empire's ships. A second piece of artwork shows the former Ben Solo taking a closer look inside one of those cloning vats, likely because he's seen Snoke's familiar face within.

Not taking Exegol down this route was no bad thing, but it certainly would have been interesting seeing how much Palpatine's return differed in a setting like this.

They just didn’t know what to do.

I felt like they were torn throughout the whole trilogy to either stick to tried and true, bringing in elements and characters from the past vs experimenting, creating new ideas and living OT behind.

We got a mix of both, which didn’t work.

I know people bag Ryan for The Last Jedi, but I feel he had the right idea of wanting to ‘move on’ so to speak. Problem being he was second and had a story, cast and plot similar to what we had seen.

If they wanted this to be a conclusion to the Skywalker Trilogy then, for me anyways, we had seen the Birth of the Empire (+ Vader) in the prequels, The peak of the Empire (+Vader’s redemption), the new new trilogy should have been about the remains finally falling.

However, I guess was set 30 years after the initial defeat so maybe saying Empire is still lingering would not work. I actually think if OT was about the birth of hope throughout the galaxy, then maybe the sequels should be about what happens when Luke dies, can the galaxy remain peaceful, will the lingering forces that waited be able to rise again.

@Knightrider - Honestly, Last Jedi is growing on me more and more. Way better than the trash we got in Rise of Skywalker.
