THOR: RAGNAROK Director Taika Waititi Confirms That He's Started Writing His STAR WARS Film

Following an update on Thor: Love and Thunder earlier today, filmmaker Taika Waititi has now shared some news about his Star Wars film, confirming that he and Krysty Wilson-Cairns are writing the script!

Yearly Star Wars films are probably a thing of the past following the release of The Rise of Skywalker last December, and the only visits to a Galaxy Far, Far Away we will be making for the foreseeable future are on Disney+. Lucasfilm has, however, dropped some hints about future plans for the franchise, with Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi attached to write and direct an upcoming film.

The news first broke back in May, and it was confirmed at the time that he would be teaming with 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns to pen the screenplay for the film.

Earlier today, it was reported that Waititi is doing a final pass on the Thor: Love and Thunder script, but the busy, and very popular, filmmaker has also confirmed that work has commenced on this untitled Star Wars flick. "We're just writing," he told BBC in a recent video interview. "We're writing."

Cameras won't start rolling on this Star Wars film until the next Thor movie is finished, and it's possible Waititi will want to tackle a smaller project between them. That could leave room for Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy to start development, but given the current health crisis, it's doubtful.

Story details for this adventure are sure to be a long way off, but given the director's stellar work on The Mandalorian, there's no need for fans to anticipate anything other than a hit.

Kind of wish this wasn’t announced so soon... his movie isn’t coming until 2024/2025 if we’re being honest

If Taika is doing the script and directing it’s probably going to be a really good Star Wars film. Looking forward to it.

@ThorArms - he did a good job with The Mandalorian episodes. So I am willing to give him a chance. Wasn't a big fan of Ragnarok though.

@LameLuka - Oh I loved Ragnarok. Most of his stuff is extremely heavy on the comedy though which I think for Thor it was great...SW...I’m not sure. I can’t believe they’re gonna let Taiki do his thing but they wouldn’t let Lord & Miller wrap up Solo.

Ugh, Disney.

After Uncle George sold out to The Mouse they tried a bunch of stuff that, quite frankly, didn't work. In essence they got a bunch of people, like JJ Abrams, to do SW films who just didn't understand what SW is really all about. What happened is that the movies looked good but were ultimately hollow and poorly received.

The big thing that can be gleaned from The Mandalorian is that it looks like they are putting directors and writers through SW School with Favreau and Filoni guiding the ship. I would imagine that all of those directors who worked on The Mandalorian will eventually wind up directing SW films and The Mandalorian will be introducing that new corner of the universe that doesn't revolve around the Skywalkers. What this means, if it means anything, is that moving forward there will be a rebirth of good SW sagas for years to come led by a diverse group of storytellers but firmly grounded in the Star Wars ethos.

Brilliant!

This movie worries me more than any of the others currently planned. The last Thor film was truly a terrible thing to the point I was whincing each time one of the terrible forced humour scenes happened, he’s the god of Thunder, not a comedian.... He’s supposed to be as hard as nails, and that hair cut... what were they thinking. Terrible, terrible film. Great actors, the scope provided by Marvel ok, just terribly executed. Worst thing in the MCU bar the mess Edgar Wright caused with Hank Pym being old, not connected to Ultron, Yellow Jacket being someone else and the Mandarin joke.

@Spike101 -
It's a matter of taste. If you don't like his style that's understandable. Ragnarok was the highest grossing Thor film so general audiences seemed to like it. Iron Man 3 similarly was the highest grossing of those movies the Mandarin Fake Out not withstanding. Of all the MCU films I probably rewatch Ragnarok as much or more than any of them so I personally find it very entertaining.

@Spike101 - I wasn't that big of a fan mysealf. But he did a better job of balancing humor and a series tone in The Mandalorian than he did with Ragnarok
