When Disney's acquisition of LucasFilm was announced, an interview with George Lucas and producer Kathleen Kennedy was released in which they talked in detail about the future of the franchise. Well, it now appears as if that was just "Part One" as another instalment of their chat has been released following the announcement that Michael Arndt (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) has signed on to write the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode VII. Now that Disney are in charge, it's hard to say exactly how much of a role they will allow Lucas as creative consultant, but he does say here that he'll have some involvement with the script. Check it out below and sound off with your thoughts on these comments in the usual place!

Atleast she's hands on, a lot of so called producers don't do shit and get the cred. Some just give money to get more money back. Lets start a production company :)

Calm down..Lucas created Star Wars,if not for him you crybabies would have NOTHING!

Disney is well aware of the flaws of the prequels & will no doubt keep George on a short leash.

However, his input is valid & I bet part of the deal he made when selling.

If you don't like it..create your own sci-fi property and SHUT UP.

In George Lucas's defense. He asked Lawrence Kasdan who co-wrote the screen play for Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back & Episode 6 Return of the Jedi to come back & co-write Episodes 1-3 but Kasdan turned him down. So Lucas know he needs help. His outlines are good. Its what created that universe. I want his input. Just not a script totally written by him like he did with Episode's 1-3.

I agree with Durango95. Although it's nice to have someone else writing the finished product, you still need to have the helping hands of the original creator. George maybe doesn't write very well but he's been the storyteller from Day 1.

Also, @sameoldthing: Well said.

@ sameoldthing maybe you should look up Ralph Mcquarrie, Irvin Kershner, Leigh Brackett, Lawrence Kasdan

What are you looking for in a director?

Kathleen Kennedy, “There are many people that sprang to mind with writers and directors that I have worked with in the past that I'm really excited to try to bring into the fold on this. We have a unique opportunity to go after some incredibly talented people; it's not going to be people that don't already have some affinity for Star Wars.”

Directors that she has worked with before:
1). Steven Spielberg (has produced every movie since Raiders)
2). Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future trilogy, Roger Rabbit)
3). Joe Dante (Gremlins)
4). Richard Donner (Goonies)
5). Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs, and Airbender)
6). Frank Oz (Indian in the Cupboard)
7). David Fincher (Benjamin Button)
8). Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park 3)
9). Gary Ross (Seabiscuit)
10). Peter Jackson (Tintin)

She has worked with Steven Spielberg religiously. I wouldn't rule the guy out.

Spielburg already said he doesn't want the gig :/

I'm pretty sure Spielburgs aware of the negative reception from Indy 4 and doesn't want anymore of that.

Lucas/Spielburg collaborations SHOULDN'T HAPPEN

God damn it George. LET IT GO ALREADY!!!! you did your part and you just made 4 billion freaking dollars. Let someone else try and write it with out you, like the 3 star wars that were actually good.

@wonderer

If you listen to his quote in context, Spielberg doesn't say that he would or wouldn't direct the movie; the media likes to use sound bites to create news.

Here is how it goes down: he is trying to promote the movie Lincoln, and on the red carpet some random interviewer asks him if he would direct Star Wars.

He says,

"No! No! It's not my genre. It's my best friend George's genre."

And, he goes back to talking about Daniel Day-Lewis being a great Lincoln.

What he does is deflect the question. He, basically, says, “it's Lucas' thing.”

In other words, the decision is up to Lucas.

Furthermore, just because he hasn't been brought into the fold, it doesn't mean that he won't be. Ford, Kennedy, and Lucas twisted his arm on “Crystal Skull.”

Enough with the keep George away from this shit. He's not directing. He knows he's not the best director for Star Wars anymore. He knows how ironic that is. You just sound completely stupid and childlike. Were you the same guys that were spitting on the legal wishes of Seigal and Shuster? George should be as involved as much as he can be.

I'd want Lucas to be a creative consultant. He can make a general outline for the story and script. The outlines for Episodes I-III are good, just executed poorly.

@sexfoodcomics: The "3 Star Wars that were actually good" you are referring to were written by Lawrence Kasdan (along with Leigh Brackett for TESB and GL himself for ROTJ) but based on stories by George Lucas. Like some of us keep saying, GL's only problem is that he's a below par screenwriter but in terms of the basic storytelling and plot design, GL is the man. He's gotta have input.

I think he will let the writers write it, but he will have like all the commands as to where he wants to go with the story.
