'Tron: Legacy' Crosses $100 Million Mark! Record IMAX Numbers!

The sequel to the 1982 classic has now grossed over $100 million domestically, with a huge amount of that coming from IMAX theaters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

"Tron: Legacy crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office on Tuesday. The movie, budgeted at $170 million, which has been in U.S. theaters for 12 days, has also made around $75 million overseas.

The most interesting note about the domestic number is that almost a quarter of the box office receipts -- about $25 million -- are from IMAX theaters. Tron is playing in 3,451 theaters across Canada and the U.S., with only 235 of those being IMAX houses. For that low count to generate 25% of the gross is astonishing. And a record proportion for IMAX."

What RorMachine said. The record is a little skewed because what it means is that not many people overall are going to watch it. It just happens to be a good percentage are going to it in 3D and thus the record for IMAX. Most movies draw a lot more regular viewers in addition to the 3D viewers. Just makes you wonder what kind of movie it would be if this one wasn't in 3D.

good for them...they can at least break even. With #'s like that, they may hold on a Tron 3 for a while....the demand may be there, but Disney's priority #1...the AVENGERS

"NOOOOOO, a movie I liked was not bleh, YOUR articles are bleh waaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaa" Oh grow up already. This film was a visually stunning empty vessel. If you enjoyed it, more power to ya! But I will always call a spade a spade, and Tron Legacy didn't hit the mark.

I thought the movie was great fun, but was not impressed with the 3D at all. Daft Punks sound track was superb.

The special effects and music were amazing, but the story was... mishandled. There was absolutely no build up to [character] switching sides. He literally does it in 5 seconds. And then there was Zeus shooting lasers everywhere for no reason.
