Don't Expect To See A SHAZAM Movie "Anytime Soon"

You may remember a few years back there was talk of DC/WB developing the big-screen adventures of young Billy Batson, aka Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel). Well, according to director Peter Segal, Man Of Steel may have scuppered those plans..indefinitely.

Warner Bros. seem to be finally moving towards a shared movie universe for many of the premiere DC Comics characters, but it doesn't seem like Shazam will be included in those plans -- at least not according to Grudge Match director Peter Segal, who was actually involved in talks to bring the character to the screen back around the time of Superman Returns in "Billy Batson And The Legend Of Shazam". Segal tells Coming Soon that he feels as long as Superman is in the limelight that there isn't really room for Shazam. "Now that Superman is being invigorated and going up against Batman, I think it’s difficult for DC to figure out how to launch this character in the wake of Superman’s resurgence." Segal goes on to reveal a few details of what might have been if his take had ever come to fruition. He says that although there would have been humor, it wouldn't necessarily have been a more "kid friendly" flick.

"I was working with Geoff Johns. At its core, it’s a lot like Superman. There’s this boy trapped inside of a superhero’s body. He’s still a boy inside, so there’s this opportunity to play a lot of humor with the action. Originally, Stan Lee brought me “Fantastic Four” a number of years for that very reason. I always have the question when people bring me superhero properties, “Why me?” With Stan, he said, “It’s because there’s a sense of humor within all Marvel characters.” These characters are flawed and, within those flaws, there is humor. When Toby Emmerich came to me with Shazam, it was because of those same reasons. To draw from that humor and to mix it with great action and pathos. I've always loved Shazam, but I don't know if it's going to see the light of day anytime soon."

That's a disappointment but it means Aquaman won't be replaced with Shazam in a possible JL movie.

Hope Shazam appears in the DCcU. I guess Humour can be used as Billy is the boy inside a mans body. They did the perfect Shazam in YJ.

Merry Christmas Ror.

That makes sense for now. Big blue is back. Can't have two powerhouses flying around kicking ass too close in the same period.

I think the story would make an interesting movie tho. The aspect of the kid summoning him (self) would be unique for a CBM.

Yes a major bummer :-( I was really looking forward to this when they first announced this a few years back. Yes, he is very Superman-ish, but he is a completely different character. Hopefully sometime.

You heard it here folks. Not all CBMs should be uptight drama fests.

@1to10, this wouldn't have redundant. It would have been more of a whimsical affair. More like "Billy Batson and the Comedic Stylings of Shazam," no? Where are the "Level 7 WB Tiny Toons" jokes?

Lol, just j/k with you...

In order to have Shazam you need an already established universe and Justice League. He's a kid who wants to be like them, a hero, and hence why he is a big Superman fan. This guy should know this. You need to establish Superman and the League before you bring in Shazam. It's always been like that.

DC has so many heroes that would look ridiculous on the big screen. Shazam is definitely one of them.
Rokyn
Rokyn - 12/24/2013, 7:23 AM
But I believe a Shazam film should be made. It should be kid friendly in order to attract younger audiences, have humor, but when Billy becomes Shazam, and witnessed the Wizard die, that's when then film should twist and challenge Billy in a way a kid would never be. Challenge him being an adult/hero and explore those themes. Like when Tom Hanks played that kid who became an adult, just like that. You can have a kid audience, an epic for people who love magic and myths, a comedy, and a story arc revolving around Billy as he becomes hero and have the other side of the coin: Black Adam. Absolute power corrupts. And a lot of Dragon Ball Z action. So much potential!

@sofo. Except that no one in a Marvel movie would ever where tights with a lighting bold across their chest and say "Shazam!".

His powers are magic based.
Stick him on a team dealing with the supernatural threats & he needs no solo film.

I think this will be hard but that's not mean they will not do it in future(after JL). Shazam and Superman Are somewhat are the same with Powers. but Superman is more about Moral codes and Justice or do what is best where Shazam or Billy is looking forwards Superman as an Idol(I think in New 52).

I Like them Both.

Like a Pixar film, have comedy and fun but also challenge your audience in a unique and interesting way. And reward them with over the top Dragon Ball Z action. A Shazam film would work beautifully in live action with a great kid actor, a great adult actor, and a great story and with the proper vision. Shazam is NOT corny at all, you can make it epic and cool and funny all at once. Embrace the magical aspects of him!

I think it's sad that DC Comics can't actually give Capt. Marvel a better name than Shazam.

The character is really screwed without his original name. But still, giving up on a name and calling him 'Shazam' cannot work.
